Hi. My name is Ron Geddert, and I just joined Travel Blog, after discovering it when I searched the internet for information on an African trip I'm doing this spring. I ran into this great blog by another traveller doing the same trip, an overlander from Vic Falls to Cape Town. I came to this travel thing belatedly--always wanted to travel, but never quite could for family and financial reasons. Now, in my 50's, my kids grown up, and a little freer with my time, I've just decided to make this a priority. In Apr., 2007, I trekked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal, the #1 item on my "bucket list". It was the trip of a lifetime, with Peregrine being the tour operator. The eight of us trekkers loved it, and seven of us made ... read more

Take down in the morning was pretty easy. Greg taught me all about taking the tent down and we packed up the car pretty quickly. The tent was still wet so this was a good learning experience. We drove out through mt. st. Helens and then up I-5. The night before Greg noticed that the lantern and stove were both leaking gas at the gaskets. We stopped off at the huge Cabella’s store north of Olympia, WA to pick up some repair parts. However, the store didn’t have anything but they did have a huge pond with fish and a huge taxidermy display. There was also an underground aquarium to view the fish more closely. We missed out the fish feeding though. Greg continued to try to find the stove parts… we stopped off at sportsman ... read more

My Dad (Ray), Brother (Brad) and I are heading to Central America on KLR 650 motorcycles. We will leave from Abbotsford. This will be a 15,000 km trip full of adventure, long days and new places. There is no schedule, just a route and about 40 +days to play with. We will travel through the following countries: USA, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicurauga, Costa Rica and Panama and back again in roughly that order. Brad heads down from Grande Prairie Alberta on his new KLR 650 (with new Teton Canyon Cut Panniers) and a fist full of oil money to Uncle Larry's and Aunty Pat's, the staging ground for the trip. My Dad will come over from Campbell River on his KLR 650 and has been busy working in on the up and down ... read more

Well, we are now in the final month before we head east. We all have "itchy wheels" and can't wait to get on the road. We had not planned to spend the entire winter in one place, but circumstances required it, and this has been a nice place to stay overall. Two weeks ago we had to say goodbye to our faithful friend, Sarge. He became ill suddenly, and died a few days later, of a cancerous tumour in his digestive system. The Veterinarian tried to save him, but alas, it was not to be. Here is one of the last photo's of him, with David, about three weeks ago. During the next few weeks, we plan to get the fifth wheel ready to travel, re-arranging things for convenience, servicing both trailer and truck, and getting ... read more
