Background: The Trucial States of the Persian Gulf coast granted the UK control of their defense and foreign affairs in 19th century treaties. In 1971, six of these states - Abu Zaby, 'Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Ash Shariqah, Dubayy, and Umm al Qaywayn - merged to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They were joined in 1972 by Ra's al Khaymah. The UAE's per capita GDP is on par with those of leading West European nations. Its generosity with oil revenues and its moderate foreign policy stance have allowed the UAE to play a vital role in the affairs of the region.

The day has come, in which two years has seemed like a lifetime, as well as a blink of an eye. I say goodbye to Dubai! While the process of leaving was simply too much of a whirlwind to recount on the day of, I think it is best I have had a few months to reflect and to finally write down what this moment entails. As much of life, this period has brought both its good and bad experiences. What a person decides to do with this, of course makes all the difference. To represent parts of my life here, [View Full Entry]

From a small outcrop island off the main island of Abu Dhabi, lies quietly, reminders for the modern trekker of what life in the UAE was like before the transformation from its desert, nomadic & pearl diving existance. With the discovery of oil Abu Dhabi & the UAE have had a rapid transformation since the early 70's. Today we have a modern metroplis constantly being upgraded & developed, with the newest of sky scrapers overtowering the older buildings still standing in often crumbling condition from the 70's. Reminders of their more humble past can be found at Abu Dhabi's Heritage vill [View Full Entry]

Though the pics have a happy spin don't let the humour fool you. These animals live in the shittiest of places on our planet. It stinks, boiling heat from the tin roofs and noise from Jumeirah road. And the cages are ultra small. Imagine if u were put in a room with no bathroom and made to live there for the rest of your life. That's what these poor things go through. I hate this place!! And I am glad they dropped the plan to bring in Dolphins here. I imagine they would keep 'em in the overhead tank!!! Still [View Full Entry]

Woke up this morning at 5:30am to watch the sunrise from out beach front hotel. It was very beautiful and peaceful. It was low tide so we were able to go a ways out in the water. It was interesting to see what it take for a hotel like this to open. There were about 20 workers just on the beach front. They even rake the sand so that it looks fresh. The water is perfectly clear, they have these white/clear fish that you can see only when they swim and when they are still you can only see them b/c [View Full Entry]

Another night of 2 hours of sleep...I'm getting pretty used to two hour doses at a time. We woke up at 5:15am this morning to catch the sunrise on the beach. The Arabian Gulf water was oh so warm. I couldn't believe it. It was warmer the further we walked out away from shore. We walked out as far as we could without our shorts getting wet. Then I rinsed my legs off in the hotel shower by the pool. I turned on what I thought was the water spout for the feet, but turned on the overhead shower head! Water [View Full Entry]

Our first (real) and last day in Dubai. We are so jetlagged, but I feel we're very productive for only getting 3 hours of sleep. When we flew in last night, it was dark here. So, it was a beautiful surprise to see the breathtaking view from our hotel room! Also, walking out of the plush, air conditioned hotel was jolting. It was like the humid heat monster just punched you in the face. We went to bed around 5am and woke up off and on and finally got out on the town around 11AM. For touring, that is a late [View Full Entry]
