Sharjah needs no introduction and is dubbed as the
Cultural Capital of the UAE by the locals as well as foreign tourists taking flights to the city. Having read and researched a lot about this emirate before booking my flights, I was not much surprised to find that the city is a far cry from the quintessential glitz and glamour that UAE’s most popular emirate, Dubai, features. Fortunately, history and culture is one of my favourite holiday interests and Sharjah had enough to keep me engaged for several days at a stretch. I was amazed to find that the city packs in a staggering assortment of thought-provoking museums that aptly justify its epithet. Here’s a little smattering just some of these that I visited on my trip to the emirate.
Art Museum This star attraction of Sharjah was certainly the key highlight of my trip and was undoubtedly worth all the money I spent on flights tickets and holidays in the UAE. Largest in the UAE and the Gulf, it packs in a world of interesting exhibits of artistic impression and sculptures including 18th and 19th century oil paintings, watercolours and lithographs. The impressive repository runs special workshops and programmes for everyone and is very well maintained and parades beautiful Arabic architecture. Entry is free and one doesn’t have to buy tickets to enter.
Museum of Islamic Civilization This will make you fall in love with the city as well as the Arab civilisation. A traditional souq in the past, the new Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is an avant-garde building that boasts a large collection of fascinating artefacts including coins, images, photographs, scriptures and much more from around the Islamic world adorning its walls across number of galleries. The museum is also home to beautifully handwritten
Qurans. It is a must-visit for any foreign tourist contemplating UAE holidays and boarding flights to Sharjah with a desire to discover the different aspects of the Islamic world! Entry tickets have to be bought to visit the place.
Maritime Museum Maritime Museum is an experience beyond the ken of words! Early settlers came to Sharjah by sea which has played a significant role in the emirate’s evolution. Here you will see wonderful collection of wooden dhows, fishing tools, devices used in pearl diving, historic photographs of old sea captains amongst a host of other exhibits. The local traditions and methods of catching fish interest one and all. The site is a must-visit for history lovers taking flights to Sharjah for UAE holidays. Tickets have to be bought to enter the site.
Archaeological Museum History lovers with interest in archaeology arriving here on long haul flights to the emirate will have a total value-for-money experience. The place ensures a date with several centuries’ old archaeological findings such as jewellery, coins, pottery and weapons, this place evokes countless questions about the then lifestyle and traditions in the minds of visitors. And it ranks high on my recommendation list to anyone who plans to book flight tickets for holidays to the UAE to explore its cultural face. Tickets have to be bought for entering the place.
