Muscat - the capital The capital of Oman is named Muscat. I spent time there in the beginning of the trip, in the middle of the trip and in the end of the trip. But I left it to the last of my blog entries to actually write about it. Most of the time I was in Muscat I stayed in an area called Muttrah. It is in Muttrah you find the cheapest hotels and that was the primary reason for me to be there. But Muttrah is also a nice part of Muscat and it has a few attractions so it is also a good place to stay. Most people who come to Muttrah visit the souq, the local market. It is covered market, very clean and nice and it feels very old. It feels ... read more

Doors en masse When Jordi and I were in Sur we walked through the streets of the Old Town. Maybe the name Old Town is a bit misleading because I don't know if this part of the city is any older than any other part. But to me it looks like and old town so I call it Old Town. In the Old Town I especially liked the doors of the houses. The houses themselves were mostly quite dull to be honest, but the doors were nice. Almost every house had an interesting door. The doors came in many different colours and were skilfully crafted. When Emma and I started this blog in 2006 the main purpose was to make it possible for us to upload photos and make them available to our friends and relatives. ... read more

Middle East » Oman » Musandam Peninsula » Khasab January 9th 2009

Five days on the road or how to crash a car in Oman In this blog entry I would like to start by writing a little about Oman as a country and how it is to travel there. Oman is situated on the edge of the Arabic Peninsula. The neighboring countries are Yemen, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. The people here are very friendly. In the days I have been here I have not seen a single trace of anyone disliking me or having a grudge against westerners or tourists. I have for instance been invited to private homes and had a very good time drinking coffee and chatting about life, football and culture. We had such a good time that at one time we even joked about suicide bombers. I felt very safe all ... read more

Happy New Year and all my Wishes to all of you. Let's hope 2009 will be as good as 2008! Welcome to 2009! What a better way to close 2008 than by a little dive trip. The challenge was not that easy this time...wanted a place where I could depart from Luxembourg between the 26th December and be back on the 2nd January. A place were I could dive, in a country I hadn't visited yet. My shortlist ended up with Djibouti, Cuba and Oman. Really want to see Cuba, but seems that at the only great reef, the boats are not equipped at all, and the food is very very...not there! For Djibouti, great place for whalesharks, but really not easy to reach. So here I am in Muscat, Oman. The last few days were ... read more

Oman revisited. On leaving Yemen I heard that a German UN worker and her parents had been kidnapped. The Locals seemed to think that they would not be harmed as they were just being used as leverage by the tribesmen against the government. I was quite pleased to be going away from all the smoke, it was beginning to affect my chest. Even at Sana'a airport I could not find a spot to avoid the smoke. Arriving in Oman at 11pm I had reserved a room in a hotel in Seeb a town about 40 kms from Muscat. It was slightly more expensive than I had been paying and therefore was disappointed to find that there was a nightclub underneath and although my room was 3 floors up the noise affected the whole hotel. I went ... read more

Sand dunes beat the hell out of snowdrifts For this year's Christmas vacation I decided to go to Oman. People have for the last couple of months asked me why and I couldn't really explain. Well, here is the best explanation I can come up with. Oman • Daylight - 12 hours a day • Temperature - 25 degrees in the shade in the daytime • Typical weather - sunshine Sweden • Daylight - 4 hours a day • Temperature - hovers around 0 • Typical weather - cloudy sky and rain Add to this that I found a cheap flight ticket to Oman and that Oman is a country with old history and as such probably has one or two places worth seeing. That and two weeks off from work is all I need for ... read more

Everyone knows that oil is a valuable resource. You know it when you fill up your tank at the gas station, when you get your gas bill, or when they add those ridiculous fuel surcharges to the price of your airfare. But I never really, FULLY, understood the price of oil until I looked out across the business district of Dubai from my hotel balcony on Sheikh Zayed Street... 50-story plate glass skyscrapers lining the road, Ferraris and Jaguars racing down it, and the tallest building in the world visible a bit off in the distance to my right. It dawned on me then that the world really, really, REALLY likes oil. I had gotten into the UAE that day from Muscat, the capital of Oman, and had flown into Muscat from Cairo the day before. ... read more

Sunday 7 December. It is less than a week since I left Cornwall but it seems an age already with experiencing so many different things. A fairly negative day. I woke early and walked to the Post Office. It was windy and therefore dusty. All buildings are vast and spread out and the entrances are never where you expect them to be. Eventually I found the PO after having to retrace my steps and attempting various entrances I found the correct one to buy stamps. I only wanted to return a book that had been given to me by Kath for her to finish. It was going to cost £10- the book only cost £7.99 so I said forget it. The Omani behind the counter looked for ways to make it cheaper whist puffing on his ... read more

Salalah Oman 1000kms south of Muscat. Staying at Salalah Tourist Hotel. What makes me laugh is that the taxi driver will often ask you if this is the way to your hotel. I don't know I live in another country-you live here-you tell me. It is a new hotel that could be nice but is already going to seed and quite dusty. Costs just over £30 inc. breakfast- coffee/toast/jam. Just like my backpackers! Made enquiries about half day tour £80! So managed to get Abdullah from the hotel to take me in the hotel Mercedes for half that. Visited Taqa pretty village and beaches at last the sea is clear and blue here. On the way the fast traffic had to stop several times for camels casually crossing the road. Then Khour Rori, the ruins of ... read more
