April 16th, cruised all day and night and a half day on the 17tharriving in Muscat, Oman at 1:00 pm. It took us a day and a half to cross the top of the Arabian Sea and then into the Gulf of Oman. What a mountainous, bleak, arid looking land off the port side of our ship. I had expected flat desert; instead, it is volcanic jagged peaks right down to the water line. Oman’s civilization dates back 5,000 years. In Biblical times, it was the center of the frankincense trade, which was more valuable than gold during the time of Christ. We pulled into Muscat, the capitol of Oman, where we had about a 7-hour stop to look around. The small bay we docked in gave us the impression that Muscat was a small city ... read more

Geo: 23.6065, 58.5881Since we have until March to make our way back for our audience with the boys at Revenue Canada, we've decided to take a less than direct route back. Since many of the flights from South Asia make connecting stops in the Gulf area, we decided it might be nice to get a small taste of Arabia. Since DH refused my suggestion of wearing a head-to-toe black burka and following 10 steps behind me, we had to eliminate the mystical state of Saudi Arabia. And the member states of the UAE are throwing something of a hissy fit since the Canadian Govt won't grant their national airlines extended landing rights in Canada (not sure who's in the wrong on this one but it is somewhat grating that this looks to be government protection for ... read more

Our destination was Musundam, Oman. We stayed overnight in Fujeirah & Ras Al Khaimah, UAE and on the way back we stayed in Sharjah. I tried to get more pictures of local life and mountain villages. Enjoy! UAE finished celebrating National Day so theres still plenty of decorations up. all the pictures of the water with the mountains were taken in Oman. the city buildings were in Sharjah. There are plenty of mountains in the area of Fujeirah and Ras Al Khaimah so they have plenty of cement and tile companies, every kind of rock you can think of and oh yes the oil fields of fujeirah. Enjoy! keep in mind that my husband likes to sight-see while driving 110 mph, so forgive the pics from the car...... read more

RUBBISH A friend of mine who has spent a deal of time in this region described the Omani people to me as "the hippies of the gulf". I didn't notice any peace sign neck chains, dreadlocks or groups of locals sitting around eating bird seed and smoking numbers whilst discussing the kaleidoscope of colours on the domes of mosques. I do however see some merit in the simile with the general kick back nature of the populace. There's no wild antics, animated gesticulating or hints of aggressive behaviour, as if they have been inhaling a few of those less than licit substances. There's even a semblance of sanity in the traffic. Good news is no news. That's why you have probably never seen Oman occupying the headlines of international media. Flying under the radar is a ... read more

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller Dubai Salalah Trip I was planning for salalah trip since i came to dubai 6 years back. The excitement gone far beyond imagination when my cousins visited the place and started poking me with beautiful travel stories. Salalah is like a mirage in desert n raining all the time (Khareef season) while rest of the Middle East is in scorching summer (July to Sept). After a month long planning, we (Sunny, hari, nelson & I) started our road trip in a 4WD from Dubai on17th august 2012 at around 11.30pm and headed to Mezyad border from Al Ain. The immigration process at the border took around 30 minutes and then we headed straight for Ibri. From Ibri town, take right ... read more

As things stand, the Middle East happened to have been one of the few areas of the globe with which I was only vaguely familiar, so a trip to Oman and Bahrain was destined to put paid to that branch of neglect and see exactly what constitutes the true spirit of Arabia. Oman was as indicative and illustrative a place to start as any other on that score, and 4 nights in Muscat was destined to enable me to gain a further insight into the various components which collectively make up the fabric of the Arabian tapestry. One key element to the success of Oman being preserved in its natural format is that, barring the numerous shopping malls and relative commercialism of the airport, for the most part, those western trappings, such as leisure parks / ... read more

Muscat, Oman... what a beautiful city and country. Unfortunately we only had a brief flying visit in to Muscat to visit our friend Topsy, however we hope to return soon to explore more. I snapped away for the brief time we were there, not great quality photos... but I thought it would give you a tiny glimpse, as it did for us. We have driven through the spectacular rocky mountains in the north on previous occasions, but this was our first visit to Muscat. It was refreshing to be away from the skyscrapers and traffic of Dubai. To see people going about their daily business and the historic fishing village area, with winding streets in the sand, decorative doors on the walled houses, leading in to inner courtyards...this was also a breath of fresh air after ... read more

It is a journey of four days time from Salalah, Oman to the port of Aqaba, Jordan our next destination. To some that may seem like much too long, but I enjoy it. I like to think of Nautica as an ocean liner, not a cruise ship. This is the way people traveled around the world until air travel came along and made us impatient to get to where we want and do it as quickly as possible. Much is lost in the process. It really is the journey, not the destination that is most important, at least I think so. I am spending much time reclining in a deck chair on the deck five promenade looking out at the sea and thinking. Most of the time there is only the sea, the sky and the ... read more

Saturday 14th April 2012: It’s clearly going to take more than just one day for our feet to recover from the last 3 days of flat-out sight-seeing. We couldn’t face formal dinner last night so grabbed a plate of food in the canteen and then watched the film Hugo. I can see why it got a lot of publicity – after all it does have Jude Law and Jonny Depp in it - but it’s not Oscar winning material. But it is charming so was a very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. Today we’ve done very little other than work on our scrap book. When we take over 300 photos in one day, you’ll be relieved we whittle that down to around 20 to actually print off. I think ... read more

Friday 13th April 2012: Friday 13th certainly proved to be a day of good fortune with a lovely visit here in Oman. We docked in Muscat, the capital, and then drove over 125 kilometres to Nizwa – home to an ancient fort and collection of souks. The drive through the mountains was fascinating as the rocks are clearly borne of a turbulent time for the earth and are an amazing array of colours: brown, beige, red, green, blue, grey and white. There is very little traffic – try to imagine driving the M25 with a maximum of about 6 other vehicles in sight at any one time! It’s surprising when you learn that water is twice the price of petrol here but maybe the “Beware Camels” signs are enough to keep some people away! ... read more
