December 7 2015 Arrived Salalah Oman an immortal second city famed for its frankin sense since biblical times. Took a jeep from Port Salalah through the outskirts of the city to old town Tagah where we first stepped in the Indian ocean. Departed for Khor Roulie along the unspoiled coasts and country side of baboo trees and coconut Palms, where we had a panoramic view of the city and siting the dolphins. Drove the Desert to Wadi Dorbat to the ruins of Samhuram. Drove through a park with birds, camels, donkeys, and cows in multiples. Next stop Ain Razat the wishing well and the spring high on the cliff. Oman a muslin country rich in oil, clean orderly and Salalah a port for trade.... read more

Geo: 23.6065, 58.5881Breakfast in the suite to start the day, but we did not have to get up early. The shore excursion to Muscat met at 9:00. We were in line early wanting to be on one of the first buses out. As it turned out we were too early and had to wait in line with a lot of other passengers while the ship finished clearing customs and was allowed to let people disembark. Loading 18 passengers and three tour guide trainees was fairly quick. Again, the bus is less than half full. At the exit to the port, the bus pulled to the side and stopped so all the passengers could go through security inside the terminal. We put our handbags through the x-ray machine, retrieved them, and then walked completely through the building ... read more

Geo: 18.7563, 58.7737Another sea day, this time cruising the Arabian Sea which is part of the Indian Ocean at 15 knots. After lunch in our suite, we walked around the deck and saw dolphins jumping out of the water off the starboard side. There were several of them performing for us.Before dinner, we went to the show with a new comedian who just got on the ship at Salalah. He was okay, but most of his jokes were a bit tired and predictable. However, the audience was generous with laughter and applause and easy to please and everyone seemed to have a good time. We had dinner in the Colonnade again since they were serving an Old English menu. The English beef we had a few days ago was excellent, and this was tonight, too. They ... read more

Geo: 17.0139, 54.0923We've arrived in Oman for two port days separated by another sea day. Today, we left early for our shore excursion to see the sights around Salalah. Leaving the port, the bus had to stop for a security check. An officer came on board to check each person's landing card. They had been given out by ship's personnel as we disembarked. Before we got very far, just after passing customs and security, one couple realized they were on the wrong bus. Although we pulled off the road and the guide contacted his supervisor, we were not allowed to wait for the other bus to catch up. We had to go back to the ship and drop them off before starting again. Arriving at the checkpoint for the second time, our guide was able to ... read more

The drive down from Nizwa took all of the afternoon and we arrived into Seeb quite late but fortunately the whole of the next day to explore the towns and surrounds. The day started with a quick visit to our final fort of the trip at Nakhal. More interesting though was the nearby Ath-Thowra hot springs, not that a place bathing in 40 degree heat requires hot springs! Back in Seeb, we had a short wander around the town. No tourists sights as such, Seeb is a coastal town that thrives on fishing and has an interesting souq and a wonderful corniche. We strolled down the corniche watching fish dry out on the sands and take in the wonderful sea views. It was early evening before we knew it and I sat and watched a 25-a-side ... read more

We left Wahiba Sands and drove the inland route through to Nizwa, driving through the desolate landscape which was unremarkable yet had a stark beauty about it. Suddenly the barren mountains that we'd seen surrounding Muscat where back on the horizon and it wasn't long before we where in Niza, which we discovered is this years 'Islamic Capital of Culture'. We spent a few hours wandering Nizwa Fort, It offered wonderful views of the city hemmed in by mountains, with date palms and mosques rising over the residential buildings. Annoying at the wrong time of day at the souq was closed but vowed to return the next evening. Nizwa and it's surrounds is famous for the many forts that dot the landscape and the next day we visited a couple more... first off was Jabrin Fort, ... read more

Still amazed from our Turtle Experience the night before, we packed up and got back in the car heading this time for the desert region of Wahiba Sands, for a night in a desert camp! On the way we had time to stop at Wadi Bin Khalid. Similar to Wadi Shab but rather that an adventure this was more of a 'parking lot and well trodden path' kind of Wadi. Still very pretty, the pools no less refreshing but just feel as wild. We stopped in a café (see, no where near as wild!), enjoyed a beverage and carried on our way. It had just turned afternoon before we arrived almost at our destination. I say almost, we were driving a regular saloon car and the rest of the way to our camp was over sand! ... read more

We awoke early the next day ready to head south on our Oman road trip. Leaving Muscat we drove south on the highway through the extensive Hajar Mountain range before arriving at the Bimmah Sinkhole. It's essentially a huge hole in the ground created by the collapse of the limestone surface and filled with inviting turquoise water. Trunks on, I wandered in watching little fish dart around not knowing that as soon as I stopped moving they'd start nibbling away! Kind of like what those fish pedicure things are like I suppose, it was ticklish but a little unnerving! So the sinkhole essentially has a waist high plateau before plunging down to who knows how deep. You can't see the bottom, just an endless blue down into the depths. No-one has been able to measure how ... read more

Middle East » Oman » Muscat » Muttrah May 21st 2015

The Middle East provides cities that straight away evoke thoughts of mystique, labyrinth esque alleys and exotic markets. Cairo, Damascus, and for me Muscat are such cities and I couldn't wait to contrast a modern city of the region like Dubai with the more traditional. Arriving on the flight from Khasab, what immediately struck me was how flat and desert like the region had become again, although this changed completely by the time we got to Muttrah, about 25kms from the airport. On arrival we drove through the new part of Muscat on a modern highway dotted with shopping malls and McDonalds. Almost completely flat until we arrived at the old port for the city of Muscat, Muttrah which is hemmed in by mountains which many years gone by would have made the city easier to ... read more
