I didn’t realise there was a hot shower in the hotel until the third morning… I was leaving for my next destination in an hour, it was winter and I didn’t want to get the towel wet whilst drying off. That’s a hard thing to achieve! So I wipe my body with my hand to minimise the water hitting the towel. Than tentatively wipe with the towel making sure I’m not sticking to the one area. After that I hang the towel up whilst packing my backpack. The reason for this is that if it is damp than the towel (now compressed in my backpack for hours) will smell till the next wash and wiping with a smelly towel makes a shower almost useless. We manage to get ourselves a driver to take us to the desert town of Abarqu. We strategically load all our gear into the car, and get the hell out of Yazd. The drive to Aberqu is much longer than anticipated, and quite boring apart from the imaginatively named Eagle mountain. We arrive at Aberqu around lunchtime, and what can I say about this town? Well if Mansour thought Yazd was a shithole, its just as well we didn't bring him to Aberqu. I immediately feel out of place for not wearing a black shirt and tight black slacks, which despite the stinking hot weather seems to be the standard dress for men in this town. Lasciatomi alle spalle il Golfo Persico, mi dirigo a Shiraz, dove ho dovuto prenotare una costosa camera d'hotel al momento della richiesta del visto al consolato di Milano. La prima giornata trascorre cosi' al chiuso, sfruttando l'aria condizionata, guardando le notizie della BBC e mangiando uva disteso sul mio comodo letto. Quando vengo scacciato da tutto questo lusso mi sposto in uno squallido albergo di bassa categoria e posso allora dedicarmi alla visita della citta' che si rivela pero' deludente: l'atmosfera e' molto sofisticata e nei miei abiti da contadino curdo finisco per essere del tutto evitato dai locali oppure per venire scambiato per un facchino e mi si richiede di trasportare grosse balle di lana grezza da un capo all'altro del bazar.
