I'm trying to plan a backpacking trip in september 08 but I won't have much money and I will be alone.
does any one have any advice or tips on traveling with almost no money. i will be starting in frankfurt germany, im going to have around $5,000 and plan on traveling for as long as i can.
Reply to this Hey Nick,
Really depends on how long you're looking to be there and where you want to go. I did pretty much the whole continent in 2 weeks, using trains, for about $3000... but that included the flight from the US. So, it'll be a modest living, but you could do it. Have you thought about getting a work permit?
Reply to this Nick,
The only thing I might suggest is to think about, and perhaps you already have, is some sort of backup plan should you have unexpected troubles and/or run out of money. I posed a question on another forum,
Gringos Really In Trouble?, and I'd hate to see you be one of those on the street that I might end up ignoring thinking you're simply a scammer as opposed to really needing help. That said, either make sure you've researched how to get a hold of your Embassy (if you're American, there is a program for "destitute Americans", though I don't know details, the
Department of State and the State Department's Travel site is helpful though probably goes a little overboard on the safety aspect. I suppose I'd rather they were a little overconcerned than the other way around). Also, maybe talk with a family member or friend that you can contact in case. Make sure they and you understand this is truly for emergency only.

You could join
Couchsurfing and try to score some fee nights accomodation on peoples couches.
Also if you are travelling in Summertime bring a tent so you can ask farmers if you can camp on their land.
If you dont mind the slow mode of transport what about getting a bicycle and cycling as far as you can. At least it would not cost much. I knew a guy who cycled long distances. He cycled from Germany to Sicily and back and then from Germany to Ireland(took a boat accross the water of course) and back.
Practice tailoring how much you spend before you leave. See if you can spend less by replacing certain things you buy with something cheaper.
Or what about you fly to India or SE Asia?
You can live on between 5 and 20 dollars per day there including cheap accomodation and cheap transport.

Reply to this Hi guys
I am really interested in traveling in different places, but my problem is I do not really have that much money to accommodate myself when I reached my destinations. My question is, what are the ways, so that I could raise a money for my accommodation fees when I get to a foreign country? or Is there any?

Couchsurfing is a very good suggestion, but a website I prefer is helpexchange.net
I've barely become a registered member there and have been getting offers from France, Wales, etc.
For any global meanderer who is on a tight budget, but willing to work on an organic farm, or chop some wood, or herd some goats for a few hours per day with weekends off, this it the ultimate website to give you an opportunity to cover a LOT of your lodging and food expenses.
Reply to this The point is what do you prefer a real Royal vacations or just spend a few days in a short Holiday
Reply to this Ive heard only good things from Couchsurfing. That and to stay away from air travel should save you a lot of money.

Reply to this Hey Nick !
I've been using couchsurfing & hospitalityclub quite much during trips and hosted several people (about 20 i think) so it's safe nice more into the culture & cheap
Otherwise hitchhikking is the cheapest way ... About budget it always depend where you travel !!!
Soemtimes you can find kind of job in youth hotels they host you and you get little money point is you don't have to stick months to this jobs and it's always nice to meet other travellers !
Hope it can help you !
Reply to this well, there are many countries that provide youth hostels with food available at subsidised rates, it will not be a five star dining experience but this way you would be able to explore the local culture at its very best. good luck!
Reply to this has any one ever taken the trans siberian railway(from russia to bejing) ? is it worth the money?
Reply to this That question may be worth posting in the Europe or Asia forum Nick.
People who know the answer to it will likely be looking in those.

Reply to this you can go whit 5000 for a 6 month travel, and you are starting from frankfurt, i think dont spend to much time in europe, go to budapest stay 2 days go to belgrade for 1 day and go to bulgaria for another day, start your exploration in turkey but avoid the mediterranean and spend only 2 or 3 days in istanbul because is expensive, and go to iran, pakistan, india, south east asia,
another option go via syria, jordan, egypt, sudan, ethiopia, kenya and tanzania,
or go to central america and part south america like colombia, ecuador, peru and bolivia or western africa.
not spend to much time in western europe, usa, canada, australia or new zeland.
aviod countries like scandinavian ones, japan, iceland, Djibouti, Maldives or french polynesia because is too expensive
