The sun came out this morning so I took Mum for a stroll round the Rhallt garden and along the canal. Very nice too. Here are some photos to prove it.... read more

Today is Caroline's birthday, and she'd spotted a walk she wanted to do. So we started - as all good walks should - with a coffee, then walked the walk, arriving back at the café in time for lunch. We went right up into the hills not far from here, along lanes none of us had been on before, and found some tracks that need exploring another day. Near a pool we saw herons and geese, and in the bog were curlew and peewits. Looks like spring is making an effort. And the sun......... well, lovely, and blue sky too. Happy birthday Caroline.... read more

The vicious wind we had recently damaged the west facing part of our roof, and brought some parts crashing down onto the sun room roof - which stood up to the test and held firm. All mended now, and painted up nicely, good as new. And as there was a bit of paint left, I painted the bit of wall by the sun room and we are pretty posh! The apple tree also came down, along with various other hedge trees. Alex has been busy pulling them all out and chopping them up. Though we need a larger saw for the apple tree. As luck would have it, I have someone coming to lower that hedge soon anyway........ read more

Its that time of year again, and we set off for Chirk castle to see the snowdrops. Unfortunately we felt rather ripped off, as entry to the gardens where the snowdrops are was very expensive. And as we found afterwards, when you do some of the woodland trails, you get a good view of them for nothing! However, we enjoyed the sights and had a lovely walk. We spotted lots of trees that had been blown down in the gales, you could see the line of the gusts by the carnage. And guess what - found 3 hidden caches!... read more

another lovely sunny morning, so I dressed Mum up and wheeled her out for a promenade along the canal - which runs adjacent to the Rhallt, and has easy access. No swans or ducks to be seen, but some dog walkers to say hello to. It was very windy so she had to wear my hat, and with the dark glasses, she looks a bit suspicious. But it was nice to get some fresh air.... read more

Ineke's birthday dawned sunny and blue skied - which certainly makes a change - and I took her out for a mystery trip to a nearby village where there are 2 geocaches we hadn't found. One of them was one of those where you had to go round finding clues before you could put in the co - ordinates for the actual cache. We weren't so good at counting exits from the churchyard - you'd think that would be simple wouldn't you, but we got there in the end and the cache was duly found. Dad joined us for a celebratory lunch of soup in the little café next to the church, called very sensibly - The Lychgate! In case you're wondering, there is a sickness bug at the Rhallt and no visitors have been allowed ... read more

Got home last night from a few days in Glasgow. I had a lovely time, and now that Martha is a little bit older there's lots of playing to be done. She never tires of knocking down a tower you've carefully built, or pulling apart the lego sculpture you made, or for that matter shredding the newspaper you were reading. I must say, its quite fun playing with such colourful toys again. We mostly pottered about at home or caught a train into the city for a bit of geocaching. But one day we took to the hills - albeit wet or snowy! and had a look round the Trossachs. Very atmospheric. The photos are not very good as I didn't use the camera, and my hand seems to shake with the phone.... read more

Four friends had decided on a walk today, with lunch out, midway between two birthdays. Planned a while ago according to days off etc. And the day dawned wet! There were 4 of us and 4 dogs, and as we'd walked 2 and a half miles to Dolgellau we decided that even we couldn't inflict 8 wet coats on a café. So we walked back to the cars, drove up to the car park in town and left the dogs in the cars. lunch was wonderful - a bowl of steaming home made stew, and lovely cakes for pudding. So the birthdays were celebrated, and 4 kitchens are no doubt full of wet clothes and boots. AND we all enjoyed ourselves.... read more

well, its not hard to test mine! However we went along to our community quiz night last night for an evening of unanswerable questions interrupted by silly things to do! Took a bottle of wine - the next table even had silver drinking goblets- and some nibbles, and enjoyed the company whilst feeling that there is still so much about the world that I don't know, even at my ripe old age. We had to draw the Mona Lisa from memory, draw a sheep and mark on where the joints of meat come from ( I would say that was from memory, but more like guesswork), construct a long line of dolls from newspaper and make plasticene models of famous people. Oh, and eat home made cake and drink tea.... read more

We decided to open all the family presents once Sophie and Tom arrived, so yesterday we took over one of the sitting rooms at the Rhallt Nursing home and stuck into opening time. Great fun, and of course, toys to be played with this year! Sue and Jerry arrived too, on route to visit her sister, so it was extended family. and tea and chocolate biscuits too! ps the sunroom roof is mended, ready for the next lot of gales - forecast for later tonight.... read more
