bienvenido a ALBA
Finally, after more than 8 years living in the UK, we've been to Scotland! (we only have to go to Northern Ireland to have been in the 4 'kingdoms'). Galicians and Scottish are like cousins: we both come from the Celts, we pay bagpipes, we're used to rough weather and we like our food (although in Galicia we don't have much deep fried stuff).

Thanks to Will and Kate for getting married on the 28th and giving us an extra bank holiday and, therefore, nearly 10 days off!... it was the perfect opportunity, so we packed the van and, with Thomas and Liz, headed for the North!

At the last minute, we decided to rent a caravan, thinking that Scotland would probably be rainy and the four of us in the camper van would be a bit tight... we shouldn't have worried, as we were extremely lucky with the weather and only got a bit of rain 2 out of the 10 days we were there.

Edinburgh

After crossing the Scottish/English border in the morning, we spent most of Saturday driving (roads in Scotland are very good in general, but they don't have many motorways, for obvious reasons) and we arrive in Edinburgh in the evening, quite tired; so after finding a camping site we stayed in the caravan cooking and chilling.

The next day we went into Edinburgh centre, and what a city!; the weather was just brilliant and we walked up to the castle, down the Royal Mile and up the Salisbury Crags. The views were amazing, people friendly and food good, what else do you need?

Highlands

We got on the van again and headed to the Highlands and, in particular, Loch Ness. After driving, again, all day, we were a bit disappointing when we arrived there, so we kept driving looking for a place to stay... and we found paradise!. A quiet lake surrounded by forest and mountains... just perfect!. We stayed there for two nights (we only found out after the first night that we weren't supposed to spend the night there, but the forest guards were very nice and didn't really ask us to leave). Liz simply loved this place!. The guys went up 3 of the mountains around it, but I chose to spend the day reading by the lake; I was joined after a while by a nice family who invited me for cakes!

Isle of Skye

Again, we were in awe at the landscape of this place: incredible rock formations, mountains and coast. Sheep everywhere and some highland cows as well. The guys went fishing and brought back a couple of fish for dinner which were very tasty.
To celebrate the Royal wedding, we went to the Talisker distillery in the island, and took a tour around it, which was interesting and (to be honest) a bit boring at the same time... I don't even like whisky!.

It was, all together, a really nice holiday, but we all came back wishing we would have done a bit less driving!

Isle of Skye
