Wow! Early brekky today, just to be sure everything goes smoothly. We motored up the Thames as we ate, and the watched the docking procedures from our balcony. Tilbury is very significant for me, for I know that my grandparents (who I grew up with but now know are not my biological grandparents), my biological grandparents, and my great grandparents all boarded ships here at Tilbury in the 1920s to migrate to Australia. What a huge step that was for them to take. As we dock I notice that the tide is out and the mudflats of the Thames are exposed (back in the old days scavengers had ”territories” in the mudflats, areas that were theirs to see what the tide had left behind to scavenge and raise money from). Other ports had hitech buffers attached ... read more

A good night’s sleep was the benefice of being in a private home. Kay brought a generous continental breakfast of sliced sausage and ham, a warm baguette, a croissant, a choice of cereals, a bowl of fruit, and home-made jams. Blueberries made a novel and refreshing layer on my meat sandwich, and the raspberry jam on the croissant was particularly delicious. More confident of the bus now, I sat up top and took photos out the window as we wended our way to Princes Street. After yesterday, I know that taking North/South Bridge Street is the simplest method of getting to many destinations, avoiding the twists of streets in the medieval city. Also, although crowded, the sidewalks were wider, and walking with some speed was possible. One Giant Leap for June/url... read more

Edinburgh 2018 August 7 Tuesday I was woken momentarily by Susan’s departure near 3:00 a.m. I woke again at 7:00 - too early, but my mind was already focussed on organizing the day. I decided to read for a while and rest. For the length of one cup of hot water I did read, but during the second cup I started to review my printed documents for this day. That took until after 8:00, when I decided that getting food was vital. Many Westwinds people were in the breakfast room, giving us one more chatty breakfast. Although I had planned to take a couple of buses to Buckstone B&B, rain and fatigue persuaded me to book a taxi for 10:30. Packing and meeting the taxi went like clock-work, and less than half an hour later, Kay ... read more

Since Edinburgh was a fairly short drive, we were allowed a slow morning. Ironically, we were so well drilled that everyone was assembled on the street before the buses arrived! As we drove through the rolling landscape filled with sheep and grain farms (hay and barley), our new guide informed us that we were looking at relatively poor agricultural land. As we entered the outskirts of Edinburgh, light industrial land uses took over and then residential areas appeared. We drove all the way into the city, which was heaving with the Fringe Festival. St Giles Cathedral, our distinguished performance venue, was in the heart of the Fringe; our bus could drive only so far, and our guide walked us the rest of the distance, not more than five minutes. This won’t be a regular regurgitation of the day’s minutiae but a sporadic spewing of travel trivia and notable ‘Al’ moments. I would like to reason this is to avoid boring any readers or even due to the infrequency of reliable wifi, but more honestly it will be because I am lazy. Our flights were mercifully uneventful apart from a rude/ignorant man seated in front of me for the 12 hour flight. His chair was broken, (I’m not convinced he didn’t break it) so when he reclined the back he would bounce on it until it hit my knees. As I am only 5ft 2 that’s a hell of a recline. Once tight against my knees he would continue to apply pressure to eek out every micro millimetre of space. His seat ended up nearly double ... read more

Of course the sun is peeping through as we head for our last destination! It was a beautiful morning in Aberdeen and we packed up and got away smartly. Peter did some work downloading offline maps and we plotted our trip with some stops on the way to Edinburgh. I didn’t really mind where we went - just wanted to soak up the rare sunshine and our last drive through the Scottish scenery. The big shock on this trip was the good quality, dual highway that we were on for much of it. We have to say that the roads in Western and Northern Scotland are very narrow and dangerous, often with no lines, nowhere to stop and relax, no services (especially loos!) and require very active driving! The ancient town of Brechin was our first ... read more

We believe we mentioned yesterday that there was snow on the ground in Scotland. Well this morning it's snowing cats and dogs! My god, what have we done. To digress a bit yesterday we were a bit sleepy (okay a lot) so after locating an electrical adaptor and having a very late lunch we returned to our wonderful apartment for the night. BTW for lunch HP had Bangers and Mash-very good, while Bird was equally complimentary of her Haggis, Neeps, and Totties. Of course everything is spelled correctly; how could you ask! As this is being written we are sitting, praying to the weather god to end the snow, while watching Good Morning Britain. At least it's above freezing so the snow isn't sticking. We are now reduced to one day in Edinburgh with determination not ... read more

Opening the front door led to sharp intakes of breath from us all as the cold hit us, even with an extra layer on each it seemed far worse than the day before. Woolly says – I had decided on the wise option of wearing all three of my Christmas jumpers, no decisions to make on which one and extra layers of warmth. I’d already kicked Jo as I heard her sniggering about the Michelin man and obviously inferring that I’m am putting on wait, having pointed out that I needed it in these climates I led the way down the path and towards the Ocean Terminal once again. Our first port of call….. go on you’ll get it eventually….. was to the terminal itself and one of Edinburgh’s top tourist attractions. We had all agreed ... read more

Woolly says – I woke to blueish skies, wet pavements and the cold, the very very cold having added several layers, including one of my Christmas jumpers, I escorted the women towards the Ocean Terminal and the place to catch the bus, better known for a famous attraction, but that wasn’t on today’s list. It was warm onboard and having settled down for the ten minute journey into the city centre I thought it a good idea to tell everyone a little bit about the city itself. Zoe and I sat back as his lecturing voice started, there was not point in trying to stop him unless we wanted a sulking mammoth so better to give in and get it over with. Woolly says – I really do need to consider my staffing situation in the ... read more
