Time has been flying by these last couple of weeks and it’s only going to speed up with an upcoming trip to France and a visit by some of the Eugene Crew. In fact, as I write this Hank and I are only 72 hours from sharing a pint or ten together. What have we been up to lately? Here’s the scoop. We celebrated Thanksgiving in Scotland with Iona, Kingsley and their daughter Rose. The night started a bit rough. We were expected to show up around six o’clock and left with plenty of time to spare and what I thought were sufficient directions. Unfortunately though the Scottish have something against street signs and we drove around for one hour within a ½ mile of the house. Thankfully though we did find it and had a ... read more

So things have actually been pretty busy around Hamburg the last couple of weeks. I have now finished all my MBA apps and interviews, so its time to sit and wait for a few weeks. I am attempting to prepare a Thankgiving dinner for our celebration on Saturday, but it seems every dish is quite a challenge. We'll see how it turns out, but I am very excited about our Fresh Turkey that I ordered for us to enjoy. :-) Today was actually a bit warmer, got up to 10 degrees (about mid 40's) and the sun even came out for a bit, really cheered me up, nice not to put on my hat, gloves, and heavy coat for once. Hopefully it will be a slight trend for a while. But anyways, enough about the daily ... read more

I realized today that I haven’t written since our return from Italy. It’s not due to the lack of activity around here, just the opposite actually, but more because since returning from our vacation I have really been missing home. I think a variety of events have triggered this state of mind. The first being my brother Randy is the proud father of a beautiful baby girl, Haley Danielle. He’s asked me to be her Godfather and I happily accepted after confirming that believing in God was not a requirement. Unfortunately, I may not even see her until the summer of 2009. Second, Joanna’s parents have returned from visiting Oregon and we’ve gotten together with them a couple of times since they have been back and listening to them talk about the people, restaurants, and sights ... read more

Ohh, glasgow!! I happened upon 3 days off from work, so decided on a last minute trip to glasgow. 80 euro flight, why not? So i set off early sunday morning... patri was coming home from the bar... for the airport. Landed in glasgow at 7:30, had some tea, caught the train to the city centre, and explored the area until 11 when i went to the Glasgow cathedral. Gorgeous church and being at a service with scottish accents added a whole new dimension to the experience! haha. i officially dub the scottish accent to be the hardest to understand. Then I went to St Mungos museum of religion and life, then to the hostel, where i met a girl, katie, who was born in liverpool, then moved to New Brunswick when she was 14 and ... read more

We didn't really do too much at Glasgow. We found our hotel quite easily which was on the edge of the CBD in a grid network of streets and we even found an on-street carpark that was located not too far away from our hotel that didn't require any payment. The Scottish cities seem to be much easier to find parking in than the English ones. On the morning of the 9th we returned our car, checked out of our hotel and boarded a train to Stranraer. This was our first train in Scotland and only our 3rd in the UK other than the Eurostar and our trip to Brighton. Luckily we got a cheap deal which combined this ticket with our ferry trip to Belfast. One thing that was strange about boarding our train at ... read more

Life carries on for us here in Glasgow, Scotland. Reflecting on these last couple of weeks had me thinking about the normalcy that is beginning to creep in. Looking at the last two weeks it actually appears that we have a social life. Last Saturday Elizabeth, Camille and I went hiking in the nearby hills. We were very proud of Camille. She managed to hike all the way to the top of her first hill. It was about 1 and 1/2 miles to the top of The Whangie. Yes, her first true unassisted hill is called The Whangie. Then on Sunday I finally got to play my first round of golf. Stuart arranged with one of his friends, who is a member of the Balfron Golf Society (they take their golf seriously), to get us on ... read more

Saturday, we drove all over Glasgow, with John telling us tidbits of his hometown. I’ve got to say, it really made a difference, and I enjoyed this time in Glasgow better than my last trip. I guess being with someone who is knowledgeable about the place, and having his love for it shining through what he tells us-it makes the tour better. I was able to see Glasgow through his eyes. We drove all over town, stopping at Kelvingrove Art Museum, on the university campus, where John showed us the Salvador Dali painting ‘Christ of St. John on the Cross’. We stopped at the Glasgow Cathedral, before leaving the city and heading south down the coast. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, and I think my parents brought the sun with them, because the whole time ... read more
