Woke relatively early, packed up the tent, and headed off to find breakfast, ...or a convienience store (proved to be a challenge on a prior trip, in some towns/villages). I tried the hotel I had eaten at yesterday, and while they served anyone supper, they only provide breakfast for guests (??). I was directed down the street and had a quick bite at a cafe that had just opened. Next, ...visit the Co-op for on route supplies, as the opportunities on route may prove limited. All in all, a good day of cycling along the coast and then inland for a while before popping back to the inlet at Inverness. I followed the A9 for about half the route (quite busy, and somewhat worrisome where the highway splits at Tain). After which, it was (thankfully) local ... read more

Lots of photos (42 I think) today. Some will be embedded into the text as that's the way this app works. The rest will be accessible via a button below the text. Today its worth looking at the photos. They will either convince you to go walk/climb Ben Nevis or convince you not to walk/climb Ben Nevis. It's almost 8 hours of walking, surprisingly almost as long descending as ascending for me. I know I walk fastear uphill and slower downhill relative to others but it become pretty apparent today. My knee gave me a little concern on the downhill section (that's everything after reaching the summit!) so that didn't help but generally the walk is really good. It is busy. The uncommonly good weather and the fact that there is a race up and down ... read more

We rented a car at Edinburgh airport and we were on your way for some great adventures! It’s me we will do the driving on the ‘wrong’ side since I was used to. It came back to me quickly enough, just need to be a little more concentrated than usual. We took the scenic route to the Isle of Skye, meaning we drove through Glen Coe, one of the most beautiful glen in Scotland. I drove through that Glen few times before, but I don’t remember ever seeing it in the sunshine! Now it’s done! Of course it was still very windy in the glen and quite chilly but the scenery is truly stunning! Well worse the detour! We stopped at Fort William for lunch. When we were hitting the road again, we saw 2 hitchhikers ... read more

Between Greenock and Inverness was a day at sea in which we would sail though the Hebrides archipelago, past the Isle of Sky and around the northern tip of mainland Scotland. Both the Inner and Outer Hebrides could be seen in the distance as Caribbean Princess navigated the Sea of the Hebrides and The Minch. (The Minch is the body of water between the Outer Hebrides and the Scottish mainland.) South Uist in the Outer Hebrides was clearly visible, but distant. We did pass very close to the Isle of Skye in the early afternoon and were afforded an excellent view of its wild, rockbound and mountainous landscape. Neist Point and its lighthouse, Loch Pooltie and the Duirinish Peninsula could be seen. As the afternoon progressed, islets in the Outer Hebrides appeared as well as the ... read more

Loch Ness It's lochhhhh not lock, okay? I got a tour by bus to the loch. Our driver was hilarious and had the same bass tone as Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords. We drove past sheep and hairy cows. Have we discussed the teddy bear of the Highlands? These Highland cows ("heery cooz") have ginger locks (not lochs) that cover their eyes in ragged mops and I just want to hug them to death. You would too. We boarded a ferry, where a tiny cafe served snacks and drinks, including hot chocolate with whisky! The driver said you'd be guaranteed to see Nessie after a couple of those, and that, in fact, he suspected similar drinks might be involved when anyone spots her. The boat guide provided a wee bit of Highland history, about the ... read more

The rain came back! That's good because it means I can sleep longer and take a taxi instead of walking to the station. I booked an early (noon is early!) train to Inverness from Queens Station in Glasgow. The cab driver, Douglas, has a daughter named Kirstin, who might need braces, lard hope she den't. He told me about some promising destinations to keep in mind this trip and said not to worry about the drive, to jest keep te the left. Rolling farmlands, verdant countryside, lush wood. The occasional castle. The cutest little boy exclaimed to his father: "DA! DED YE SEE THE WEE LAMBS?!" and I just about wept right there. Wee is a real thing and it's every day and it breaks my heart with goodness. Inverness is a stone town on a ... read more

Today's mission is to leave the Isle of Skye and head for the ferry from Kilchoan to Tobermory. Left Carbost travelling down a single track road with furry obstacles. Another sunny day??? Booked my 90 minute boat trip in Elgol and then drove Elke, Sam and Benny back up the hill where they could explore the shop and the small creek. I drove back down to the pier and got ready for the tour across the loch. Water was calm and nice ride. The Bella Jane does this trip mainly to drop passengers off so they may hike across the islands. Right beside the dock was the beach that Danny MacAskil started his trek called "The Ridge" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ_IQS3VKjA Watch this clip, you won't believe what this Scottish bike rider will do. Got to see lots of ... read more

Todays trip takes us up the Great Glen. 2 lochs split Scotland diagonally from Fort William to Inverness. Another beautiful day. First stop is the Urquhart Castle ruin on the side of Loch Ness. Massive visitor center here now. Large museum and theatre display the long history. Site dates back to 12th century with the current building starting in the 13th. After being destroyed by retreating Government forces in the late 1700's the castle was left in ruins. We are off to the Culloden Battlefield maintained as a war cemetery. 4 or 5 hours to properly view all of the presentations and museum artifacts. It takes a lot of reading to understand the root causes of this confilct. It was a lot more than just a group trying to put a King (James) back on the ... read more

Leaving Pitlochry today to head into the Highlands. Can't swing a cat here without hitting a distillery, this one is Dalwhinnie. Once again have to take a tour in order to get a tasting. We are heading for a little church we found on our first visit totally by accident. Back then at first glance I thought I was looking at sheep on the mountain but they were actually monuments. After seeing the church from the highway you have to make a sharp turn and take the road that climbs up the mountain. Spectacular vistas and because of the weather it is even more pronounced. Found a note that said we could get the key to the chapel from a local lodge so this time we got to go inside. Down the mountain we go and ... read more

"The trail is completely unmarked and passes through extremely wild and rugged terrain, far from services and facilities for much of the distance. Although many sections follow paths and tracks, there are also some sections which are pathless and a high degree of navigational skill is required. Walkers need to be self-sufficient and to carry food needed between resupply points. There are also several unbridged river crossings which can become dangerous or even impossible in spate conditions. The route has the reputation of being Britain's toughest long distance walk."
