Still suffering from a bit of jet lag. Woke up at 2:30 and tried to get back to sleep, successfully till 5:30. Packed up my things. I've been leaving my suitcase in the car. All the hotels over here have stairs and no elevators and I'm tired of dragging a suitcase up the stairs so I just take the 'necessaries'. Had a delicious breakfast at the Cedar Villa and headed SW toward a place called Cannich where there is another chambered cairn that I wanted to see. I had plenty of time today so I just took my time. As I was driving out of Inverness the oncoming traffic was all covered in snow. Monday 29 June. The day started as it finished the night before with fine rain and low cloud hovering over the water of Loch Linnhe. Undeterred we had a plan and set off to drive the 8 miles to Fort William. Within one mile we were held up in a traffic jam due to work to clea dnmake safe a landslide. Once clear of that we drove to Neptune’s Platform just outside of Fort William. This is where the famous locks on the Caledonian Canal which link Loch Ness to Loch Linnhe and in effect enable a passage between the east seaboard of Scotland to the western. Built by Thomas Telford it is a quarter of a mile long structure made entirely of brick and concrete and consisting of 8 locks which drop in total 19 ... read more

With a fair mileage to cover we didn’t want to be too late on the road this morning to get underway to the Highlands of Scotland and in particular, Onich, a small settlement on the shores of Loch Linnhe. Inspecting the overhead sky as dawn broke gave us the feeling that the drive at least for the early part would be in misty or foggy conditions. The ring road around the greater part of Edinburgh makes it easy to get from one side to another although today we only needed to use it to get us heading west on the M9 towards Stirling. From what we remembered from our last visit here there wasn’t a lot to see on the way to Stirling and anyway this morning the fog blanketed out everything down to 100 metres ... read more
