Success! A haggis meal has been consumed. It was not all plain sailing though. Yesterday we hopped on board the train at an ungodly hour (7ish) and headed for Inverness. At this hour our Britrail train passes aren't actually valid, but we were counting on the conductor not knowing this or not caring. Indeed the conductor glanced at our passes and then passed right on (he didn't let on if it was apathy or ignorance). Nothing in Inverness was open at that hour, except McDonalds. We boarded our train to Dunrobin Castle at 10ish. The Dunrobin Castle station is only open during the summer months. It is at the end of Dunrobin Castle's driveway and is used solely for their tourists. Actually it was built by one of the Dukes of Sutherland (the family that lives ... read more

I had a wee dram of Talisker on the Isle of Skye last night. Since we couldn't get to the distillery, it was the least I could do. Last time we were in Scotland we had haggis at the Saucy Mary's (the hostel on Skye we were staying in). At the time we had had haggis a few times already and so were able to say, with a degree of certainty, that the haggis at Saucy Mary's was the best we had had so far. So, I was looking forward to haggis and Talisker as my last meal on Skye. It was not to be. Under new management, haggis is no longer on their menu. In fact, haggis has been very elusive this trip. No where have we seen it. Oh sure, the odd butcher has ... read more

Edinburgh and The Cairngorms To celebrate our 10th anniversary we decided to head for Edinburgh and then continue on up to the Cairngorms. On our first evening we visited a comedy club. There was mixed range of talent: the compere’s material mostly consisted of having a go at the audience (you got a feeling of bitter disappointment in life such was the vitriol), and a class act from Canada and his observations on being a foreigner in Scotland. We stayed in a plush hotel for the first night and enjoyed a repeat visit to the Scottish Museum (highly recommended) in the morning. The journey is pretty impressive on the Edinburgh - Inverness route. After the Forth Bridge, the rolling landscape of Fife and the spectacular views of the coast, the train heads inland towards Perthshire. ... read more

Well, It's definately been a long time coming and for many hope had already been lost and they had resigned themselves to a season without snow and absolutely no chance of hitting the terrain in scotland on board/skis. Last week however a cold front decided to bless the Highlands and a good bit of the rest of scotland with snow and plenty of it. Taking advantage of the fact that I am indeed a student and can choose my own days off I headed out to Glencoe with a couple of mates. First ever experience of boarding on snow in Scotland and I was definately not dissappointed. The weather was quite dodgy but that added to the excitement. As did the rocks that we consistently had to dodge due to a slight lack of cover. The ... read more

Raining on and off Thursday, we drove along Loch Ness and went to Fort Agustus and visited the Clansman Centre. We watched a DVD on the Scottish Clans after paying a small fee and then walked the area, found an internet cafe and strolled along the Caledonian Canal. It goes from Corpach to Inverness for 60 miles. We weren't here long and we found Glenmore Forest Park and walked part of it, being the only people here. We got on the 862 road and then hiked a path to the Falls of Foyer and forest walk. It was a pretty area and the falls are 135 feet tall. After hiking back up and driving down the road, we did a short walk along Loch Ness. When driving again, we spotted two mallard ducks along the side ... read more
