HAPPY BIRTHDAY KIRB-DOG!!! Warning: Lengthy entry. Get a glass of wine, relax and enjoy todays events. Also, I am not a historian so do not study for any history exams based off this blog. Oh, don't tell me I am wrong about any of the history. Please let me live in my ignorant bliss. --- Waking the boys up this morning was chore. The curtains were wide open, tv blarring and every light was on and these boys were not moving an inch. I tried every trick outside of throwing cold water on their face. After about 20 minutes of harassing they finally woke up. The hotel we are staying at has an option to purchase breakfast with your room reservation. They serve continental and a hot breakfast. We opted to include the breakfast in our ... read more

Today, I hiked the section of The Fife Coastal Path between St. Andrews and Crail. It was 15 miles there & back. The path takes you from the beach by our house along the Scotland coastline to a golf course. The path is gorgeous.. I loved hiking in nature and the silence. It was so peaceful and calming. Later I will be going to dinner with Aubrey's roommates Becky and Hayley then going to be the Minion movie! I love my minions!... read more

Good evening/afternoon, my fellow Americans! Before I start with my adventures for the week, I just want to take a moment and brag about my wonderful boyfriend whom I love so very much. He left on Monday for his own 8 week summer adventure at an archaeological field school in Idaho. I am so incredibly proud of him and all that he has accomplished thus far in his academic career and so happy for him that he was granted this opportunity. He has said that it is very very very hot there, so I'm sure he would appreciate any and all good/positive/rainy thoughts sent his way :) Now, onto my adventures for the week. On Monday, a couple of the interns took those who wished to go on a traditional hike up to the top of ... read more

We survived our first day of driving! Our rental car is hilarious - since we're renting an automatic car in a primarily manual country, the only automatic car available was a pretty sweet minivan. Anyways, we left Edinburgh yesterday morning, and only got lost for about an hour on our way to Stirling Castle. Stirling Castle was really pretty, and had awesome exhibits on Mary of Guise (the mother of Mary, Queen of Scots), and tapestry weaving (my inner yarn-ahaulic celebrated). The tapestry re-creation on site was phenomenal - it depicted the Hunt of the Unicorn (symbolism of Christ). From Stirling, we made our way to the Fife area to spend a few nights with our friends. Our friends live in a small town on the coastal trail called Anstruther (home of the best fish & ... read more

Geo: 56.3389, -2.79892Today we headed towards the East Scottish coast for a change of scenery and a chance to meet up with Lorenzo in St Andrews. The land here is much flatter. Some lovely Norfolk-esque fishing villages. Isaac enjoyed running on the sand at a forest beach and then at St. Andrews. We took the scenic route back past the East Neuk fishing villages. Very picturesque and the sun even kept up with us! Wish it wasn't always accompanied by so much wind though!... read more

After an easy morning across London and flight to Edinburgh its straight into a car - and beautiful sunshine in Scotland!! No, I'm serious, the sun was out. So we've gone the long way around back to my old digs of 1997 in Kincardine village on the River Forth, home while I worked at the power station. This is a small miner's village, the mines operated from the '50s to about 2002 but it still describes the village. My old pub, Garvies is still the same just a different owner. The place was buzzing because the locals were warming up for the trip into town to watch Scotland play Gibralter and the word obviously passed around quickly "...there's some Australians 'ere in th' barrr" (imagine it with a thick Scottish accent). We've taken the long way ... read more

On Friday, 19 December I took a day-trip to St Andrew's. This was just over an hour's train ride from Edinburgh Waverley. The train calls at Leuchars, about five miles from the town of St Andrew's. While there is regular bus service to and from St Andrew's I walked what's called the Fife Coastal Path instead. It was a bit chilly but the sun was bright (as bright as it possibly can in early winter in Scotland) so I decided to take advantage of the nice day to check out the scenery on my way to St Andrew's. The town is well-known for multiple reasons, one of which is that golf was 'invented' here, of course (pun intended). On the walk into town the path travels right along the edge of The Royal and Ancient Golf ... read more

Once upon a time you needed to take a ferry to cross the Firth of Forth, just west of Edinburgh. Fifty years ago, all that changed as the Forth Road Bridge opened. The ferries stopped and motorists saved a lot of time on their journeys. Of course, rail passengers have been able to utilise the more picturesque Rail Bridge since 1890. As time has progressed, the road bridge has got busier and busier and it is estimated that some 65000 vehicles now cross over it every day. The bridge is struggling to cope as it was designed in a day when far fewer cars were on the road and nobody could have predicted the exponential growth in road traffic. The solution is a new bridge which is being built in clear view of the old one. ... read more

The hard part was getting there! We (well, especially me) like to have two seats together instead of the usual three in most airplanes. This is especially important during an overseas flight, which can become very uncomfortable after sitting so long. I found that KLM, which is operated by Air France and Delta, offered 2-seat rows on their Airbus A330 flights from Seattle to Amsterdam. We flew from San Francisco to Seattle, then to Amsterdam, and then it was a short trip to Glasgow from Amsterdam. When we arrived at Seattle we found our flight was delayed about an hour, which meant we would miss our flight from Amsterdam to Glasgow. We went to the ticket counter and explained our situation. An agent spent a lot of time trying to get us on another flight, with ... read more
