Malmesbury is a mouthful; sounded like marmalade in a bun. Motivated by a historical novel, I followed the protagonist who travelled to Malmesbury abbey on a horse to find answers to a riddle during those turbulent times. I took local 40 minutes bus ride from Swindon to Malmesbury with a bag of crisps and bottled water. During the reign of the Henry the eighth, Malmesbury abbey was one of the monasteries which got dissolved to fill the royal treasure. Geographically, it is set on top of a small hill with the two tributaries engulfing the town to join River Avon. The vast meadows with the fresh water was ideal for sheep husbandry. Geo: 51.5848, -2.0996A drive to Great Somerford, a beautiful village Wiltshire village at the southern end of the Cotswolds, to stay with my cousin Meriel and her family. A short drive away is Malmesbury, supposedly the oldest continually inhabited town in England. Modern excavations have revealed the remains of an Iron Age fort which would date it back to around 500BC, but official records can trace Malmesbury back to the 5th century.The imposing 7th century Abbey sits atop the hill and became a site of pilgrimage and learning and later in the 10th century, Athelstan, first king of (all) England and grandson of Alfred the Great made Malmesbury his capital.The medieval streets are lined with honey colored stone buildings and the marketplace in the centre of town has a magnificently preserved 15th century market cross.But what ... read more

Scott and I enjoyed a sensational weekend at Whatley Manor, a very kind wedding gift from Scott's manager. We took the train from Paddington and jumped in to 'Craig's Cabs' for the 30min journey from Kemble to Malmesbury. The cabbie took us to and from the Manor and was fanastic. Telling us this and that about the area and rather a lot of detail about 'The Christmas Carol' - he was a collector of memorabilia. We drove past Charlie's country gaff and heard a few stories about Princess Anne, plus a visit by the Queen that happened recently. We were in the heart of Royal country and felt like it entering the Manor via a tree lined long drive-way, with automatic opening doors as we approached.
