I wasn't really planning on being here. A number of decades previously, I had set off on the adventure, otherwise known as a University education and a group of us had decided to meet up in Manctopia to reminisce about our youth for a couple of days. Alas, COVID 19 got in the way of the plan (and just about everything else). The North West is pretty much in local lockdown, so it seemed pointless to expose ourselves to infection rates way above the national average. The 10 pm pub curfew wasn't exactly going to get the party started either. The 2020 intake of students had already hit the headlines. In the national press, it was billed as an illegal gathering in the grounds of Owen's Park. A visit from the local Constabulary, fines and ... read more

We started the day setting out to explore the castle ruins of Pontefract. We were greeted by a spectacular church that was damaged, but has a new church nested inside. The castle remnants hinted at the previous impressiveness of the castle that was there. It was destroyed by parliamentary decree in the 1600's. The signs and plaques located around the grounds gave a good idea of the layout and structure of the castle. Next, we arrived in the quaint town of Bakewell. After taking in the ambiance of the downtown, we finally sat down to have tea in England. The tea was very fine and the accompanying Bakewell Pudding was absolutely delicious (Bakewell pudding is ONLY available within 15 miles of Bakewell -- Oh well ) On the return journey from Bakewell we stopped in to ... read more

This morning we drove over to Pontefract for their annual Liquorice Festival. This event came to Janet's notice a number of years ago on an earlier trip to Yorkshire, but she was unable to attend on that occasion. She has been burning with curiosity ever since and recruited us to the cause fairly early on by alerting us to the fact that this event would coincide with our time in Haworth!! Considering that the event is high on Pontefract's calendar of events it was surprisingly difficult to find. We thought that we would be able to follow the bunting from the outskirts of town?! Eventually we found our way into the town centre and that was where it was all happening. We had timed our arrival for the start of festivities so it was not very ... read more

Why didn't anybody tell me it was going to be THIS cold?! It's Monday morning, and i'm sat next to the radiator. I've made a start on our traveling DVD and trying to keep myself occupied as much as possible. I told Amber that I definitely wouldn't have the 'travel blues', but now it's hit me like a freight train. Coming home on a weekend was a blessing, as my family were off work and I really enjoyed catching up with everyone. Then, this morning, Dad went to work and I woke up to an empty house; And a stark realisation that this really was a return to the real world. When you go away for a fortnight and come back home, your house feels spacious and unfamiliar. Well imagine that feeling x1000. I feel like ... read more

Hello! Or should I say Namaste.... Thought i'd get the blog ball rolling, as I sit here at my old mans house in good old West Yorkshire. Today has purely consisted of drinking ale and driving around parts of Yorkshire listening to tales of me Dads childhood, which was (as always) very insightful. I'm now about to have a few drinks at home with the family to say goodbye. Our journey has been booked for a couple of months now, and the realisation of travelling the world hadn't hit home, until today; We were sat in the beer garden with a pint of our favourite beer (Black Sheep) and me dad said to me "Well lad, this is the last pint of Black Sheep you'll have for a while", Now this sounds strange, but considering that ... read more
