I went to work today for about 30-45 minutes. I think I am going to be doing research on health care systems in the EU compared to the states and that should be very interesting. I spent the rest of the day walking around newcastle and shopping a few more things to get my self settled. I still need pots and plates and stuff but I am going to the wal-mart eqvivalent on Saturday so I'll make do until then. I've put up some pics of Newcastle and the campus. Also, am planning some trips to London and back up to Edinburgh over the net few weekends and of course I have to get down to see Ian soon! ... read more

The trip over was smooth. I slept the whole flight, navigated my way through Edinburg on the bus and caught the 12 noon train to Newcastle just barely....bought my ticket at 11:55! I am now moved into my room. I forgot was it was like to be on campus but I am jumping back into college life, community showers and all. Yuck. I slept most of the day yesterday, bought some things today and am going to the supermarket this afternoon. And actually, I better run....everything here closes at 6 pm save for bars and restaurants. I hear stores stay open until 8 on Thursday though. I'll get pictures of Newcastle and more details up soon. Be well. Han... read more

We finally arrive in Newcastle and after getting lost on the wrong side of the river, we finally make it to the ferry port by the 11:00 A.M. check in time for the 2:00 P.M. sailing. After boarding and securing the bike, we make our way to our cabin. The ferry is quite nice with clean, well-lit cabins, several restaurants and even a cinema. We settle in for the 26 hour crossing to Bergen.... read more

'The Journey' was conceived in a drunken state towards the end of my final year studying Marketing and Media Studies at university in Leicester. Inspired by the epic 'Long Way Round' with Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman, my housemate and soon to become travelling companion Adam Dale and I realised the true extent of distance between the UK and China. . . ."It's a F**king long way isn't it?" I remember one of us remarking. At the time, it seemed like a good idea, "Let's hitchike from the UK to China!" The next morning it still seemed like a good idea. By the time graduation came it still seemed like a good idea. Today it still seems like a good idea. Only Time will tell. The Journey will see Adam and myself travel from Newcastle upon ... read more

Evidently relaxation disagreed with me. I woke up with a blocked nose and sore throat. I could have put this down to being in zero degree temperatures for the last few days but I’m sure my body was disagreeing with taking it easy. This was another relaxing day. We went into town with Paul and he bought some travel items for Morocco trip, I took photos and we had a few coffees. Tynemouth was the next stop. Sophie, Paul, Jo and I headed north and out to the coast for a fish and chips dinner. I ordered the scampi which was lovely - I wish we could get it like that in New Zealand. Tynemouth was much prettier than the other suburbs we had visited so far in Newcastle. It is a seaside town in the ... read more

Woke up with only a moderate hangover at about 1000 - no one else had stirred and the house was quiet. Finally - around 1300 - most of the house was awake and Paul took Mel (one of his work mates), Jo and I on a guided tour of the Newcastle Bridges and Tyne Riverbank. We had a look at the Spencer Tunick Photography exhibition at the Baltic Gallery. Spencer Tunick is an American photographer who arranged for over 3000 people to turn up naked in Newcastle at 0500 for a photo shoot. The Baltic Gallery had five or six huge wall sized photos of the day on display. In one, all the subjects were lined up laying down across the Millennium Bridge, in another they were on their knees all looking into a shop window. ... read more

Up reasonably early to catch the train from Kings Cross to Newcastle. Despite an unscheduled 20 minute stop to fix a “technical problem” we took around three and a half hours for the whole trip (600 kilometres). The Metro in Newcastle links the main rail station with South Gosford Station - just a block back from Paul’s flat. We had a rest for an hour or so then went up the road to ASDA to get supplies for Paul’s 30th that night. I also grabbed a pork pie - no one does pork pies like the poms. We started drinking around 1800 and went out to a pub near the Central Station then a club across the road until around 0200 before getting a cab home. I only brought one jacket with me for the whole ... read more
