Oxford's boat race names (Torpids, Summer Eights / Bumps, Isis Skulls, Christ Church Regatta) still make me twitch, though I twitch nowhere near as much now as when I rowed and when I saw the race names on the calendar in the training room. The names still conjure up memories of English sport for the privileged; cricket, hunting, fly fishing and rugby union. Such sports need expanses of cared for English landcape in which to play - a stretch of river, a lake, a cared for pitch, an expansive Downton Abbey estate. The need for a groundsman and / or someone to look after the kit and tackle. Rowing, always visually beautiful in summer also has a winter beauty that is rather sadistic. It's cold and wet season loveliness is in the knowing that "this will ... read more

London is not only great to explore, but also as base for day trips. So I slipped in my itinerary a day trip to visit Bath and Oxford. There are actually group tours to various destinations, but after reading many horror stories (getting left at, time too short at each attractions, etc) I decoded to take matters on my own hand. However, as Bath and Oxford are quite far from each other and got lots of sites, I'll have to start my day really early and ends it quite late. I left my hotel in Liverpool Street just before 7 am. Believe me, I felt really stupid booking Tune hotel in Liverpool Street instead of their Paddington branch. It was unnecessary commute. As I booked early in advance, I managed to get cheap tickets – total ... read more

Catherine's aunt Berenice has a lovely home in the inner suburbs of Oxford, and we gathered there for the days leading up to, and following Christmas Day. Berenice cooked a wonderful traditional dinner, including an eight kilogram turkey cooked on an AGA stove, and we shared the day with Charlotte, Imogen, Tarrant, and James Hoyle. Duncan Anderson, Christine and boys, Theo and Toby coming over in the evening. We had two brief sojourns from the house over the two days, despite the rain. Firstly a brief walk past the stately homes of Banbury and Woodstock Roads. On boxing day we wandered for a few hours past the collages of the university and had a few beers at the Victoria Pub on Walton Street. Hexhamshire beer and a Guiness! Wonderful...in the right weather. Tarrant has recently enjoyed ... read more

Our daughter Elise has been living in the UK for a year now - London to be specific. We could not let another Christmas go by with catching up. Catherine travelled across before me, and we all met up at Catherine's aunts place in Oxford on Christmas eve. Catherine and Elise started the adventure with an excursion to York. Greg arrived in Oxford after a long, but uneventful flight from Australia. The long leg from Singapore to London is tiring, but a lot more efficient than the routes that go through an intermediate middle eastern stop.... read more

Oxford – The name that is associated with renowned colleges , university and intellectuals. One cannot help but visualise students hurrying up to the university and intellectuals debating and busy innovating. Well, along with all this, Oxford is also rich in history with its age old buildings standing there with a pride of having witnessed the history. From Bournemouth, Discover Dorset Tours offers day trips to nearby places of historical significance. My husband and I along with a friend, bought 3 tickets to Oxford tour through Discover Dorset tours. On a Saturday morning, we were picked up by a mini bus from the Bournemouth bus station. Oxford is around 94 miles from Bournemouth which takes about 2 hours. We started at 9 am and reached Oxford at around 11 am. On the tour, we had people ... read more

I almost decided not to write about what was a mostly uneventful day in Oxford. It was, as the title suggests, oh so quiet. But I guess if you are one of the 18,000 Oxford University student intelligentsia in pursuit of academic excellence, then that is probably how you like it. But nevertheless, Oxford is probably the most famous university town in the world, with lots of magnificent architecture and pristine lawns to gawk at, so I shall briefly regale you with my short visit to the hallowed town. After almost five years living in England, a two-day work team-building exercise had finally drawn me down Oxford way. As we would be based on the outskirts of the town, I decided to come a day early to have a look around before the "team-building" commenced. Along ... read more

Yesterday, it was a little bit a disappointed. Today, we should visit Oxford, and tomorrow we should go home. So, we hoped that today it would be also one of the highlights of our trip. And it was. Oxford is a very beautiful city. It feels small, open, not very busy and is very atmospheric, also because of it beautiful, cultural buildings. And all highlights are easy to walk (well, some parts take a huge walk, but you do not need to take a taxi). I think it was more beautiful than London, because London is bigger and it feels very huge. Also, London is very busy, especially at the Oxford street and almost all highlights are far off each other, so you need to take a taxi or the metro. So, today, Oxford! At 10 ... read more

I had to wait until we got home because of iffy internet connections. We are home well & happy. This will be our last blog from Oxford. The internet was not at the B & B last night, so I am writing this one on the bus taking us to Heathrow Airport. They actually have an electric pug by our feet so I am not running down the battery. Yesterday was a wonderful day, but, a little bittersweet with knowing we were going home today. First we went to a large supermarket for Glenn & Nooni to stock up on larger items without having to carry them home. We bought a few items ourselves to bring home. We also got fresh bread, sausage & cheeses for our lunch at home. Jim and I took a last ... read more

First let me say thank you for all the great comments. They are so encouraging. We had a fabulous Easter service at the Christ Church Cathedral. They had chairs everywhere in every nook and cranny. We were glad we got there reasonably early, but the 11:00 service didn't start until 11:30 because of getting all the people in and seated. We sat so we could see the Dean deliver the morning message. The pipe organ and the choir were so good. We've gone to concerts and not heard as beautiful music. Then, we went to another Gastropub (known for it's chef & food) and had an amazing roast beef dinner. The potatoes were like scalloped potatoes, but with full cream and lots of butter. Good thing we had walked for an hour & 1/2 before lunch. ... read more
