Geo: 53.9577, -1.08229Guy Fawkes was born in York. We strolled past his birthplace as we explored the magnificent old city of York. Cobblestone streets, a grand cathedral, viking influence, a standing medieval wall, this was a great place to behold. Entrance into the grand Cathedral, St Peters was delayed, as a prayer service was underway, with Prince Andrew 'hogging' the church. I mean really, using a cathedral for prayer with tourists afoot! With the new entry would be restricted to the public until the afternoon, we headed to the famous Bettys restaurant for morning tea. Each of us chose a delicious coffee from around the world, along with a snack. Pikelets for Natalie, a berry cheesecake for Joe and cinnamon toast for me. Best ive had!Next, a walk through a street known as the shambles. Just ... read more

Another pretty cruisey day today, a bit of shopping in York and then a drive around the Dales before finishing with dinner by the canal. CHANGE OF PLANS We have a slight change of plans for the next few days. We will be staying an extra night in Skipton and then heading down to Bath for 3 nights, originally we were going all the way down to Dorset but found an awesome deal on a Five Star Boutique Hotel set in 7 acres of gardens just outside Bath -20 minute canal side walk to get to Bath CBD (around 5 minutes by car). We figured it would give us a really relaxing few days in ‘posh’ surroundings (bit of a treat) before we head back to London for England v Wales Euro 2012 Qualifier and then ... read more

its hard to get used to not having a job, de-stressing takes much longer then a week. we are starting to practice, cooking in storm kitchen, walking long distance, and with 12 kg bags on our backs, we rock climbed, and cooked, making enough food for an army! we will have to cut down on the food we carry in new zealand because our backpacks already break our knees!!!! we trekked back 15km after rock climbing and Richard had no skin left on his heels (those pesky new boots) we were lucky with the weather but our time calculations was not too good as we ended up wading through muddy fields in the pitch dark!! the weather is real bad now and we have not had the time we wanted to go out rock climbing but ... read more

I didn't answer and turned off my phone. The room was hot due to the air conditioning automatically turning off sometime I the middle of the night. I got up and turned it back on. The wake up call was at 6 with breakfast at 7. I was able to order my breakfast this time and finally got the scrambled eggs made correctly! The day was overcast with a chance of rain later. We boarded the bus for a short ride to Anne Hathaway's cottage for a 5 minute photo op. It was a beautiful thatch roof cottage with one of the best gardens I have ever seen. Although ... read more

Before returning to London, we spent a few days exploring the Scottish Border area and the Yorkshire Dales. The first stop was Berwick-upon-Tweed where we had planned to meet up with a friend. Unfortunately the nearest campground was one of the huge ‘mini cities’ with hundreds of caravans jammed together in a field. The free camping options around the town looked pretty limited so we had to cancel our visit and head further down the coast. Our search for a place to park up for the night was a bit of a mission. We made our way down to the beautiful little village of Bamburgh. It turned out to be a picture perfect little place with a cricket green underneath a castle, right next to a long sandy white beach. The campgrounds near the village and ... read more

The weather is improving all the time with the temperature warming up nicely. And it is a great day to stretch the legs again on the dales although this time the other side of the valley from Settle. Arthur is calling by at around 9.30 to pick us up but first we have time for the Tuesday Settle market.Time enough to buy another black pudding although this time I will be a bit more sparing in my breakfast to make it last longer. And I couldn't go past the sausages made from pork with black pud and apple for my dinner tonight.Gretchen visited the fish merchant again but went this time for a fillet of turbott which is a fish she had not tried before. With the larder full we didnt need anything else and lunch out was ... read more

When you are away from home and travelling as long as we are you need a day or two here away from sightseeing and doing what you would do at home....administration and housework. So today was designated administration day for catching up on emails, blog, banking etc etc etc. We also got a bit of junk TV watching in as well with an episode of the Jeremy Kyle Show.It amazes us how the people on this programme bare their lives warts and all to the world. We have at times thought that it is all scripted and the people on the stage are actors because some of the situations are so farfetched. We actually had to think about what to have for lunch today as we had planned to stay in and so late morning took a stroll down ... read more

Thursday 18th June A Walk on the Dales The day started out a little brighter than yesterday or at least the rain had gone. The temperature was still cool though and even down in the protected valley that Settle was in there was a good northerly breeze. After our day out yesterday we decided that this morning we would catch up on some washing and do some housework. After we had been down to Booths to get some supplies in and buy something for dinner we called in at the local tourist information office in the town hall building to see if they had a brochure on walks around the southern section of the Settle to Carlisle railway line.We already had the brochure on the northern section of the line and it had said that there was ... read more

The late night of Sunday has seemed to work on me sleeping in later, well at least another hour and I am not tempted to turn on the TV news and breakfast programme until after 6am!!much to Gretchens delight. Today is market day in Settle. The town was granted a charter in 1249 by Henry III to hold a market each Tuesday and it has done so every Tuesday since. Now I reckon that must be a world record for the most consecutive number of markets days ever and one for the Guiness Book of Records!!! We could see the people setting their stalls up in the market square area from our house but we had to get breakfast finished before going down and browsing what produce etc we would like to buy. The weather remains dry although it ... read more

Well, one good thing that came out of the little medical drama from last night involving Eric, the husband of my cousin Rhona,is that I am now sleeping in after 5am!!!!And Gretchen reckons that that in itself is a great achievement. We were of course late to bed after returning from the hospital with Rhona,Eric and Jean around 1.30am. So it was a very leisurely start to the day as we waited to hear from Eric and Rhona as to how Eric had been during the night and whether they felt comfortable in driving back to Leeds later in the day. Thankfully he was much better when they called around late morning and it was good to see he had his colour back again. He had even had a hearty breakfast. We chatted away again about things in general ... read more
