Dover CastleDover CastleDover Castle

Atop this rampart is the most commanding view over Dover.
Landed at Heathrow and checked into the place I'll be residing at for the next month while here in merry 'ole England. Very nice place, a lot of history on the walls...pictures of teams dating back to as far as 1871. I was sent over from Canada as part of the advance party, so I got to check out the Dover area before the team arrived. One thing that I was surprised by was that you can see France from the cliffs of Dover. That must have made Dover very nervous during WWII...

The first stop in Dover was the train station. Had a quick tea at the pub accross the street, and met the owner. Nice Irish lad, he bought a pint for both me and my colleuge. After the pub we headed up the hill to Dover Castle...it was a 10 minute drive by car. The castle offers a command view of Dover, and accross the channel, and is worthwhile to see. There is a lot of history in the castle, dates range from 1000AD or so to the gulf war. There is a very interesting tour called the 'Secret Wartime Tunnels', in which they take you into

the catacombs dug into the cliffs which were used in WWII. The start of the tour follows the story of a downed RAF pilot brought in to be hospitalized. Highlights also include areas where aircraft over the channel were tracked, and the place where the evacuation of Dunkirk was planned.

The Castle offers a great view of Dover below, leaving for some great pictures. If you want good pictures of the white cliffs, however, I would suggest going elsewhere, as the best views from the castle will include the ferry dockyard, At any one time there are two to three ships at the dockyard.

If you intend to make it a day trip, the train leaving from Waterloo station in London takes an hour and fourty minutes.
