After the football disappointment of yesterday, it was good to see more bright blue skies and warm temperatures as I woke. The weather wouldn't get in the way of the evening plans. The Outlaw and other olds were off to knit and natter in the next village of Seaview. We arranged to meet them for lunch later and went out for a walk. Seaview is the local millionaire's row. A mix of huge houses front on to the bay. There are those that retain the traditional Edwardian residences and others where demolition has been the order of the day with the architects being given licence to go all Grand Designs thereafter. If you have a couple of million to spare, there could be a house for you. The school holidays had mainly been the 2 weeks ... read more

It had been a fairly uneventful and straightforward journey down to Southampton. I don't particularly relish a 300 mile drive these days, but the trip was as good as it gets. The blistering temperatures had seen the rush for the coast start early, so by the time we were skirting Winchester traffic was light. The M27 was a bit of a race track as usual. The Hamphire drivers like nothing better than to get their foot down. We took the city centre route through Southampton, which was largely closed with it being Easter Sunday and arrived at the Red Funnel terminal 2 hours ahead of schedule. Alas, the 1400 hours sailing had just slipped away from the berth. We swapped the ticket and were pretty much first in the queue for the 1500 hours crossing. The ... read more

Billed with the headliners of Amy Winehouse, Gary Numan and the Human League, the Bestival on the Isle of Wight was a feast of music, fun, rain and mud! MUD - I don't think so! Phew, we missed all that lovely mud; as the family will recall - Lena does not do that! We did not attend the Bestival (far too muddy and cool for us), but we saw the remnants of the Bestival as we waited at Southampton ferry port and watched the bedraggled festival goers with muddy boots, legs, faces etc (you get the picture), trundle off the previous ferry. Needless to say, once on the ferry Alan fastidiously cleaned our seat before we sat down (too much mud) and we had an uneventful trip across to the IofW. (Note: exciting ferry picture) The ... read more

We started off near a prison today, in Parkhurst Forest. From how people refer to it, I assume the prison is a major establishment. Certainly the “forest paths” are wide enough to take a vehicle if needed. There are narrow, untended paths angling off this maintained one. Betty Wood volunteered to be “back marker”, to keep track of stragglers. As I was videoing flowers, I asked her if she knew the names, and she did – every one. This made an interesting walk for me, although the others may not have enjoyed it too much because there was very little to see. We walked quite a way through a town – quite ordinary, except for the piglets that looked so cute. After this we tramped along various types of paths to the River Medina . Here ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the second and final post I'll about a trip to France and England in October 1997. The last post covered my time in France while this post covers my time in England. After arriving in England we returned to the bus and made our way to London where we stayed for two days. It was a rainy and foggy experience where the weather certainly wasn't with us. We ended up spending most of the time on the bus although we did get to spend some time walking around on our own. Some of that time we, in a juvenile fashion, spent buying beer despite being way underage. I was a good boy and returned it though before drinking it, I guess I just didn't really want to fool the system. ... read more
