The Saturday morning market in St. Albans seems so old-fashioned. Vendors set up tents with tables selling fresh fruit, veggies, dresses, shoes, hats, and scarves. Some sell paintings, books, old record albums, and flowers. I see blankets, carpet, toys, CDs,...basically anything you need. Some food carts are parked in the middle of the road, like those burrito and taco carts in Nashville. Except these have menus with lamb kebabs, curry, and fish & chips. It smells wonderful! I walk down the street, looking at all the tables. The food is so cheap! A big bunch of grapes for only one pound! People are packed into the street like I've never seen in St. Albans. Apparently, though, this happens every Saturday. I'm looking for a bike, because when I get off the train every morning to go ... read more

We spent two days in St Albans with Scott and Amanda - had a fantastic time (they were so hospitably (even giving up there own bed to sleep on the couch for us!)). Scott is in between jobs at the moment, so was great for us as he was able to show us around a bit. We slept for 13 hours after we arrived so managed to recover from some of the jet lag. The next day we did all the admin stuff - got bank accounts sorted and UK cellphone numbers etc. So fantastic having Scott there to show us what to do and where to go. The people here are really friendly too - quite different from the UK - like the shop assistance actual have a smile and chat to you! Maybe because ... read more

Well today was just the break i needed. I spent the day with my Aunty. Watching tv and talking to Sugar and Kerri on the phone (at the pub after hockey training - good work!) took up some of the morning. Then we went to see 'Sex and the City' movie at a local cinema. GREAT MOVIE!! And I think it's safe to say that i'm becoming a sook when watching these movies. I cried CONSTANTLY during the movie - good god! what's with that? We walked Tilly around the park across the road when we got home. It was actually a little sunny and warmer for a change today. Hopefully i'll hold out tomorrow. I cooked up a storm tonight - beef stir fry. Yum. Now am chilling out on the couch, watching 'Dodgeball' and ... read more

i woke up this morning at 5:00am but forced myself to go back to sleep til 7:30am. i think not listening to my body with regards to eating (ie. eat whenever i want rather than wait til i'm hungry) has worked in my favour relating to jetlag! (my weight - not so much!). My plan today is to walk down the street to the village they have to do some shopping, then head into london city to go on red tour bus and see andrew (uncle) for lunch. it's cold/drizzly today and i need to buy some kinda pants (like cargo pants). I put my jeans on last night and where that little line of fluff was (where i continually asked whether it'd be a problem) IT TORE!!! so now there is a 3cm tear in ... read more

If you´ve been enjoying the blog up to this point, then thank you for your attention and interest. This being the final blog, we hope not to let you down. However, this is a little personal, and although we have no new destinations to offer you, we wanted the chance to reflect on this final and most important one - home. What it is to have a home is something we have learnt to appreciate this year; ever-moving as we have been. Having family and close friends - those who understand you, and love you for being you; that is so important, and we have missed it. We've missed their easy conversation, their warmth and their energy. What else have we missed? Well, bread, cheese and milk, as we know and love them. Our sofa we ... read more

Just over a week has past and everything has already become routine, for instance waking up in the bushes alongside the road in a large city. This morning is strangely peaceful because I have slept to 8am. A rare luxury on this kind of journey. It is my intention to reach London by night and a flat tire is my only current hinderance. I retrieve my bike and once again buy a single tire tube, having the utmost faith that surely this one will not go flat. The simplest route appears to once again be the A5 and I take it despite the fact that it is impossible to bike. After a few hours of struggling to make headway I give up with it and this 2 lane highway catches my eye. Why not take ... read more

Got up early (too early) got showered, and headed downstairs to what I was told was to be quite an “authentic British breakfast”. I was ushered in to the dinning area at 9.00, and offered cereal or muesli (if you ever have the chance, it’s lovely). There was milk and orange juice, as well as toast, and different homemade preserves. There was also a hot tea kettle and a French press on the table. Then Linda, the proprietor, came in with a plate, it was heaped with eggs, ham (bacon), sausage, tomatoes, potatoes, and mushrooms. Just brilliant! I sat there for the better part of an hour trying to get it all down. I can’t even begin to describe how delicious it was. The rest of the day was walking around St. Albans and seeing glorious ... read more

Those were the words Lindsay said to me as we were about to board our plane from Atlanta to London. It is an eight hour flight, which makes it one hell of a pond! We arrive at our destination, in St. Albans at 14.00 local time. We have spent 15 hours traveling, and it’s been 27 since I’d had a shower. We got lost in St. Albans looking for her brother, Robin’s house. When we finally turned around so I could find a map, we were at his place in 10 minutes. One of the first things anyone would notice is that all of the “townhouses” are narrow. I mean, there were some as little as eight feet wide. They are a bit deep, but it doesn’t make up for the fact that it’s necessary to ... read more
