Hi everyone! Well, Connie and I are on the last leg of our journey and we're looking forward to being home soon and showing everyone some good pictures and sharing fun memories. We are currently in Portsmouth, England, visiting a friend of Connie's and generally relaxing a good deal. It's funny... travelling is not necessarily relaxing. There is the constant anxiety and worry of catching a train, making a connection to another location, watching your bags, etc... And on top of that, there is so much to see and do in every location that you can feel overwhelmed. So this is the first stop that we've had where we can't really sight-see and are forced to relax and bum around a house for a bit. It's been really nice. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions for ... read more

Well this is it - with 3 weeks to go before I leave work on sabbatical, then another 3 weeks before I finally hit the road, I guess it's time to firm up a few plans! So - the plan is to get to Australia by boat, bus or train - so no flights. Nearly everyone arrives by plane, so why not do something a bit different?! I've wanted to do it for years and the idea of arriving by boat is one of the reasons for this trip - so let's hope I can do it! I've read about other people who have had the same idea - but not of anyone who's actually done it! The first part of the trip will involve taking a ferry - probably straight to Norway from Newcastle and ... read more

Good Friday... just two days to go before I say goodbye to England for the next twelve months and set sail (well fly actually!) on what I hope proves to be an adventure of a lifetime..... Going travelling with my mate Gary, who from the looks of his blog is a lot closer to being ready than I am. http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/woolster Finally vacated flat, sold car and obtained savage hair cut which should last South America .... Fingers crossed, with a herculian effort to get my gear together I'll just make the airport Sunday... Watch out Rio here we come! ... read more

I came back with the intention of seeing as many of my friends and family as I could and after landing and arriving back in Portsmouth for a few days staying with my friend Craig, Rob and Kev they have been putting up with me boring them about how life is out there etc. I then went to see Omar, Charlie, Jackee and Mike and the rest of the gang in Somerset to get some well needed cider. Charlie did not know I was coming home and got a little bit of a shock as it was her 21st birthday when I came back. A wild party was had with half of Somerset turning up to Wivvy Rugby club for the do that saw a guest apperance by Michael Jackson in the form of a pensioner. ... read more

When one door closes another one opens... That's it then... another chapter closed... another stint at IBM finished. I've made some good friends in the last couple of years (yes you...) and I'm going to miss a few things about working with both them and IBM. The list of things that I'm not going to miss are a little longer though of course, such as working in an office, the poor customer service skills of one of the women who work on reception, oh yes: and paying thirteen pence for hot water... never did understand what that was all about! lol Thanks to those of you who made my time at IBM memorable and a massive big-up to the UKISA BCM&PT team who did a whip round for me as a leaving present and stumped up ... read more

Something possessed me to book a flight home and actually come back here to the cold weather expensive prices and all that goes with being a citizen of the crazy island we call the UK. I was pretty homesick and decided that I needed to see friends and family and so I decided to book a flight home. Got a pretty cheap deal with Qatar which takes me back to Thailand on the 6th April, Thats right everyone at Mermaids thats when I am back 6th April then on the 20th April I am flying to Sydney to see family and work my way up the east coast looking for a diving job. Its cold here and I cannot get over how eveything seems to stand still at home, I have seen and done alot of ... read more

There is no such thing as a bad decision... Apologies for the huge gaps in my journal entries, but I've been somewhat busy these last few weeks with training my replacement at IBM and making decisions about the imminent trip to Taiwan. I'll be glad when everything is sorted and Will and I can just leave! I've realised that responsibility to others when we're making decisions can be immense. The best thing we can do is explain with honesty both the benefits and drawbacks of our decisions to those affected by it, then we know that we are doing the best we can and that we have made a good decision. I've learned that the key skills in making good life decisions are courage, honesty, knowing your values and accountability. Stand courageous at life's crossroads. Stay ... read more
