Well as we write this blog our time in Manchester is coming to an end. Considering all the other stuff we have done we have been pretty boring in Manchester. We haven’t really done the place justice I guess but hey we have been desperately trying to save.. oh and also see the rest of the North of Britain to boot.
We have been living in kind of hospital flats which are really student accommodation that the Radiology department owns. It’s not the cheapest, but it is pretty nice and we are both close to work, especially Jason, who has the tiresome walk of all of 80m to the front door.
The area is very multicultural, with a strong Indian, Pakistani and African community. The street just around the corner is called The Curry Mile for the obvious reasons. We have managed to sample quite a few of the establishments but our plans to visit most were extremely optimistic given there must be close to fifty of them!.
Being home to the great Manchester United football club, the richest club in the world and this years Premiership and Champions league winners, we thought we
One pass to Old Trafford
we forgot to take our camera better make a visit to their home ground - ‘Old Trafford’. To get tickets to a game you would have to sell your first born child. Seeing as we haven’t got that far yet (yes we will get there eventually mums) we had to settle for a Tour of the Ground and a visit to the museum and enormous merchandise store (no wonder they are so loaded). We were quite surprised by how modest the players communal area and change rooms were, we were expecting a bit more bling bling and luxury given theses guys’ salaries!
We have had a visit from Karen one weekend which was nice to have someone else to talk to on the weekend! We also got to give her back all her stuff! We had a nice meal out, yes you guessed it.. curry and a few drinks at a small live music venue.
Had a little taste of culture when Kirst’s work colleague invited her to watch an amateur tap dancing musical she was in.
The Waifs even played a gig here in Manchester which was great to see, very reminiscent of being back in Perth where we
never actually got around to seeing them play.
Just outside of Manchester is the lovely Peaks District National Park which we have visited twice now. We had a lovely day trip out and about dropping in at a couple of the local attractions. These included Peak Cavern, more affectionately known as the Devil’s Arse. The cute little town of Eyam, famous for it’s outbreak of the plague which wiped out most of the village way back in 1666. We also stopped off at the Millenium walkway at New Mill’s along the way.
We have tried to make the best of long weekends (as well as a few others) to get out and about in Clancy as well as visit London, but these are worth a quick blog of there own.
Work, well it has been ok. Kirst has been somewhat frustrated with her position working in community clinics with not much contact with colleagues, while Jason has been pleasantly surprised with how his job has panned out, having the benefit of lots of great colleagues. Enough of work anyway!
