Theres no I in team
The likely lads assembled - (from L to R) Sam, Duncan, Alec, Jona - with full Uniform. Unfortunately this turned out to be a contribution from Samwise who owned a worrying amount of camp, sparkly tshirts in varying sizes. These T-shirts will be take around the world come what may. Did we mention we will be in Melbourne for the Gay Mardi Gras... 1st Blog Entry
Here we are sitting in lovely Clifton preparing to leave with our families gathered for final farewell. We have been enjoying curries and desserts culminating in a 'happy travelling cake' complete with eight candles representing the number of months we will be away for. It's a long time! Yeah!!!
Pour eux qui sont francais, on est desolé mais vous allez etre obligés d'ameliorer votre anglais!
To all those reading this who are not familiar with the Bristol2Bombay team;
We are all friends who met at Cotham Grammar School in Bristol around the age of 13 or so. All born and bred in Bristol, apart from Samwise who maintains his African roots (The Gambia) ;-) We have all recently finished our A-levels and will all be heading off to University next September, Jona and Sam to Edinburgh, Duncan to Sussex and Alec has still time to choose.
In preparation for our trip we have all been working hard, in call centers, restaurants, pubs, health clubs, delivering pizzas, selling shoes and, well, filing. We have never been so rich. Without any expenditures or overheads we have all found that you can raise allot of money in
Happy travelling to you...
The legendary cake that inded spelt 'Bon Voyage' in Smarties on its surface. a short amount of time if you put your mind to it. Now to break it down...
Alec (by Jona) - a happy and friendly guy: his smile will surely win us many favours on the road. Always enthusiastic and likes to be on his feet, Alec plans to finish his trip in Fiji where he hopes to join a tribe. We have all been missing Al for a few years after he moved to another college in Bristol, so it will be great to spend some quality time with the great man...
Jona (by Alec) - Jona and I have become closer friends over the summer while we were making our money to fund the trip of a lifetime. Jona will be a key member of the team who will be a perfect traveler to gel with mine and Sam's personalities. Jona is good with words and will be perfect to haggle for things like our camper van in Oz. Also, his wide array of knowledge will help when arriving in new places to make sure we make the most of our trip.
Duncan (by Sam) - Dunc is very nice to be around. He's outgoing,
The Leaving Party
On Thursday night we hired out a bar in Bristol to say our farewells to our friends from Bristol. Many turned up - We even had our own DJ playing funky tunes all night.. animated and enthusiastic and his energy is delightfully infectious. He's a bit of a geographer, but we don't hold it against him, likes the outdoor and his active lifestyle but not to the extent where his fitness can be irritating to others. He is kind and patient and perhaps best of all he is damn funny.
Sam (by Duncan) - "Samwise" as he is known amongst his many friends, is adventurous and extroverted, a 'culture vulture' you could say, who would fit right in across many countries and cultures due to his sociable and adaptable nature. This man is horizontal, he's chilled out; fun and easygoing - a person who we all couldn't do without in our team. Talented in many areas of life, Sam will try to lead us all into wild and crazy activities, which I’m sure we will all gladly oblige!
So you have met the team, all that remains is to outline our plans for the trip. We have made a route map on the top left of this page, to visualize our route.
Mid November- Sam, Alec and Jona depart for Washington where we will spend the Thanksgiving period. We travel down
Duncan
Duncan (far right). We will leave you high and dry until you come and join us in OZ! Under strict instructions to NOT buy a Van without him.. to South Carolina and then up to New York. By mid December we will pas through LA en route to Fiji. Here we spend Christmas and New Year.
We will then land in Melbourne, where the original three hope to live the life for a few weeks before Duncan joins us mid January 2007. Hopefully we find a Van, and begin a road trip up the East Coast. Asia beckons in March 2007. The 'Hub of Asia' - Singapore - is our first stop as we travel through Malaysia (perhaps Indonesia) into Thailand.
From there (approx mid April) Sam, Alec and Duncan fly to Hong Kong then China. Jona meanwhile discovers the train network in India, where Alec and Sam plan to join him later.
Well that is the plan!! For everyone using 'travelblog' for the first time - make sure you click on 'subscribe' to get alerted when we update. You can also leave comments and feedback.
