Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Today my sister informed me that my blog has been somewhat boring lately. I pointed out that this was due to me being sick and therefore, my LIFE had been somewhat boring. So, to make up for that, I can now say that I was able to do some sightseeing this past weekend. Saturday, I went to Windsor Castle. I had a finite amount of time because I needed to be at my brother's around 5:00 PM. When I arrived in Windsor, there was a LOT of traffic! There were quite a few people who had decided to visit Windsor that [View Full Entry]

Today I popped down to see the Queen at her Castle. She was busy so I wandered amongst the throng of tourists visiting her abode. Not too shabby. After doing a load of washing I headed through One Tree Hill gardens down to Honour Oak station. Chatted to a couple of biddy's at the station. In London no one says boo to a goose, and I love to see the reaction when you start a conversation. First they look at you as if you have committed a sin, then after a short response, they chat like theres no tomorrow. Rather fun [View Full Entry]

Today was Windsor Castle day and we hauled the kids out of bed at an obscenely early 8am to get there in time for the changing of the guard. The train ride was pleasant and efficient and the kids were suitably impressed with the speed at which the train traveled. It was nice to get out of the city and the castle was beautiful. Of course, it started to rain just as the changing of the guard began. Those who have seen the changing of the guard probably know that it goes on for an impossibly long time and accordingly many [View Full Entry]

Changing of the Guard
Not so royal family
Lauren with Castle

Today we went to visit the Queen at Windsor Castle and she was at home (the flag was flying). While we were there, the Changing of the Guard occurred. We visited the State Apartments and St George's Chapel. The guide was able to tell us about the extent of the damage caused by the fire in 1992, which took out the roof of the Great Hall and some other areas of the castle, and then explained what was done to restore the damage. St George's Chapel is the church of the Order of the Garter, the oldest still active order of [View Full Entry]

It was our last day on the road so to speak. We were handing back the car, or Holly as well called it due to the sat nav voice. We named it Holly as it reminded us of Holly from Red Dwarf! We packed up our belongings, said goodbye to the lady at the hotel whom we had had a big chat with the day before, and headed off for Windsor Castle. The plan was to drive the 1.5hr drive to the castle, explore around, drive to Heathrow airport and drop the car back then pick up our airport transfer that [View Full Entry]

After much time (over one year) and deliberation the four of us have agreed that we deserve to take a break from studies, work and perfunctory chores. Remniscing the Belfast break we took in Jan '08, I am indeed amazed at all the happenings and changes in the last year. The kids have grown but, not as much as the rent! Anyways, with Trilok's birthday fast approaching, we decided to do a kids holiday this year. This sadly translates to (as those of you who have kids know!) amusement parks and techniquests (not a romantic beach or adventure sport or even [View Full Entry]

Today we went to see the magical Windsor Castle, one of the royal residences. I think all were awed by the grace and beauty of the place. Again a place where history seeps from every crevice. In the afternoon we travelled to Porsmouth where we walked on board Admiral Nelson's Victory, this was truly an unforgettable experience. [View Full Entry]

Well, it's been something silly like 6 months, almost, and we're still not quite there, but it's coming, I can feel it. We hope to move out in a month or so, to Ealing Broadway. Mon has a job! You probably all know this, but it's big and we like it. She's right in town, big commute but it's worth it because it's a job where she'll learn a heck of a lot. It's in procurement analysis, whatever that is. I have resigned from my job, as you may know - to put it in a nutshell, it's boring and repetitive. [View Full Entry]

Hiya all, Amazingly we had another nice weekend with no rain! We were just starting to get the feeling that we had somehow been transported into another country when the rain started again today (Tuesday). Now it’s raining pretty consistently and I am not looking forward to my walk home! For your excitement and enthrallment here is the next instalment of our lives: WORK Well, work is work. I have survived my first month here which means I got paid - yah! So no more living on next to nothing and now we can plan some trips further abroad. My work [View Full Entry]

Well, more or less. It's taken 6 weeks, but I'm finally feeling human again, ie not exhausted at 10 pm every night. Work is beginning to make sense - about time, really. The complete lack of blogs (or communication, for that matter) is entirely due to this imposition on my time and energy, motivated by my compulsive greed. I joke - if I were motivated by greed, I would be doing umm... something where I can make lots of money. Like charge for this blog. Ahem. That's me for now - I want more music! Mon is well - she has [View Full Entry]
