Riding across the vast plains of southern Russia we had a hard time imagining what any government could possibly want with all of this flat, dry land. As it stands now, the federation is the largest country in the world. Trying to picture all of this PLUS the former CIS states is mind blowing given that Moscow is closer to New York than the Russian Far East. Here in the Crimean Penninsula, however, it is easy to see how a superpower would want to lay claim to a destination so removed from its core. This place is truly gorgeous and different in every way from the rest of the landscapes on our route. Riding through vineyards high above the sea in the shadows of alpine peaks we are exhaulted after 5000 kilometers of flat, flat and ... read more

Crimea and Odessa After we left Kiev we headed for the somewhat unusual tourist destination Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. Donetsk is dominated by mining and heavy industry and there are very few tourist attractions in the city. Add to this that the city is located far into the east close to the border with Russia, far away from the main tourist attractions in Ukraine, you realise that very few tourists visit the city. Our guess is that there are at the most two things that come from Donetsk you have ever heard of: 1 The winners of the 2009 UEFA Cup in football, the team FC Shakhtar Donetsk 2 The pole-vaulter Sergey Bubka Sergey Bubka has been honoured with a statue outside the Olympic Stadium in Donetsk. We actually went to Donetsk just so Ake could ... read more

Basing ourselves from the nice summer dorms of Priban hotel above a hill in Bakhchisaray we did excursion around Crimea. Next stop was Yalta, we bought our bus tickets the day before and all we have to do is turn up, we are a bit early and there was a bus departing soon so we just hopped on, driver didn't mind. itwas about 2 1/2 hours drive as we get close to Yalta we started seing the Black sea coast nice scenery the road winds on top of the bay and you see the beautiful beaches(albeit some are rocky)down below. Soon as we arrived ar the bus station in Yalta we tried to figure out where is bus 27, the bus we should take to see the sights, tips coming from the young Polish couple. Craig ... read more

As per usual the blog begins with an apology for its tardiness, especially as we are both home now but, as mentioned previously, the Ukrainians aren't too hot on their public internet access and frankly, we became somewhat lazy. But here we are: Simferopol Simferopol does not warrant much review, in fact we became bitter and twisted by remaining for the night. It has no merits upon which a recommendation is based and thinking back to the place evokes sore memories... Perhaps this is because we arrived after our 30 hour train ride and instead of entering beautiful Crimea were halted in an ugly transport hub. Simferopol is the point of entry/departure for the whole of the Crimea, and it looks it. There were holidaymakers everywhere displaying that inevitable behaviour, witnessed most frequently at train stations ... read more

October 17th - Arrival and meeting Jason The train arrived really early in the morning, at about 6am, before dawn in Sevastopol. Fortunately, the town bus starts early and as per-Jason's text I made my way to Malahov Korgahan, where he has got out of bed to meet me, and we headed back for some more sleep, followed by breakfast. He took the afternoon off, I sleep for the morning, and we head out to Balaklava on a series of Mashrutkas after lunch time. This was the first warm sunny day I'd seen since Slovenia, where I'd lost my sunglasses, so I bought a pair of 15 glivna glasses, for the journey. On the way out to Balaklava, we passed through the Valley of Death (from Tennyson's famous poem, and quite a few Irish songs too). ... read more

Breakfast was only served from half seven to half nine, so we dragged ourselves out of bed around nine for it. It was a nice buffet breakfast with cereal, breads, yoghurt and pastries. We returned to bed until our checkout time at twelve. We left our backpacks in the luggage room at the hotel and set out to waste the next twelve hours. We wandered around the main streets looking at the shops and becoming amazed at the amount of school aged people hanging around the streets. We found the central square and the statue of Lenin and took the obligatory photos. We went to a bookshop to stock up on books for our overnight journey but despite being recommended in Lonely Planet they had next to no English novels. We decided to try and find ... read more

We didn't bother with breakfast this morning as we believed that a sleep-in would be more worthwhile. We got up after a couple of wake up alarms and packed rather quickly. When we went to checkout we were accused of stealing two towels which I did not stand for it at all. I did get an apology but it did leave us with a bad taste in our mouths. We caught a trolleybus back to the bus station but somehow managed to miss the stop and ended up getting off at a random stop to go back in the correct direction. We ended up catching the same bus back towards the bus station much to the amusement of the bus driver. We had read in the guidebook that the trolleybus from Yalta to Simferopol was the ... read more

We went to breakfast today with high hopes. I told the lady who was serving us that I was vegetarian and she nodded with understanding. First course was a weird uncooked aubergine, tomato and mayonnaise dish that neither of us could eat. It was such an unusual breakfast dish that we thought it must have been leftovers from the night before. The next course was even more unusual, it was a steak with rice and parsley. I reminded the lady again that I was vegetarian and she took it away. I realised I wasn't getting anything instead so I nipped to the toilet. When I got back, the steak was sitting on the table in front of me. Rob had said I was a vegetarian and she had shrugged and left it there anyway. After our ... read more
