Wednesday 9 August I know what toys I want and I'm getting much better at moving to get them, but I have to pull the mat toward me or spin around or push myself back on my back by arching back. I love rolling from side to side and exploring! But it's so frustrating I can't crawl or walk yet! I keep kicking my legs but I can't move yet unless I push my feet against mummy! I'm also able to make a lot more sounds and squeals and I'm practicing the bababab sound. Mummy sometimes copies me so I must be doing it right! In the bathtub I also try to move around and grab the big shiny silver cord but mummy tries to stop me! My favourite thing is to pull myself up using ... read more

It was late in the evening when we unlocked the door to our next home - Rue Jean-Calvin in Geneva. My pram wouldn't fit into the lift, so I was carried upstairs :). We weren't there long. Almost immediately, I was carried back down, and put back in my pram. The cobbled streets bounced me off to sleep, whilst mummy and daddy found a place to eat nearing midnight aside the Old Arsenal. A very accomplished violinist was practicing / busking adjacent to the restaurant, so dinner was accompanied by live music. This was not the lifestyle mummy had when she lived in Geneva - she rarely went out to dinner back then! Daddy was very tired the next morning because apparently, after dinner, he had attempted to move the car closer to our apartment. After ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Interlaken July 31st 2017

We have arrived in Interlaken by car. This is a cute town with a river running through it. It has a huge green field in the center of town. It is located between two lakes Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. It is surrounded by mountains, forests, meadows and glaciers. We are staying in an Airbnb rental, a 117 year old home owned by a young couple. They are renovating the house and it is very plain inside but has a great location near the center of town. In Interlaken everyone speaks German so we change to guten Morgen (good morning) and danke (thank you). Our main reason for coming here is to hike, the weather report is not looking good but in the morning there is a change and we head offf to Grindelwald. If you ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Sion July 31st 2017

Partly because mummy is keen on swimming in high (& cold) lakes, and partly because Pierre-Jean has an emotional connection to the area, we were driven up a windy hillside clad in grape vines and then a treacherous mountain pass (4 cars were washed from the road 2 days after we visited) with hand blasted cliffside tunnels to Lac de Derborence. The walk on the other side of the valley had whet daddy's imagination. You can see the path in the photos. Conquering this path could help me to become a mountain adventurer! The lake was very low and a thunderstorm threatened, so we just scampered around the lake edge (with one eye open for rattlesnakes) and then took a late lunch at the 'refuge'. A piano accordianist in the corner had me dancing and bringing ... read more

We fly from Berlin to Geneva on Easy Jet. We rent a car with GPS and make a short stop in Geneva. Switzerland has four different official languages. Lausanne is French speaking so we have fun saying bonjour and merci. We walk around the old town and stroll along the lake. We find prices for food and drink are really expensive. I paid $8.50 for tea at Starbucks, we plan to pack lunches and cook diners at our Airbnb. We bought lunch at the grocery store and eat outside with a view of Lake Geneva. We love the house we have rented in Lausanne, it has three bedrooms and all the rooms have a view of the lake. We walk around the old town after shopping and eating dinner. Our second day we drive 35 minutes ... read more

Thursday 20 July I awoke to find myself in the dreaded car seat again. I had just got used a pace of life with a less hectic travel rhythm, but there I was again! Fortunately it was only a few minutes before we stopped in Carouge. Daddy and I enjoyed a stream of filtered sunlight whilst mummy went to find her Spanish friend whom she had met when she had lived in Geneva. Daddy had also met her some 15 years ago. Sonia is very pretty and has a beautiful smile. She gave me a great hug before we sat down for a morning tea of pizza. Apparently Sonia is always hungry! We did return to driving (sigh) with the target of Chamonix in our sights as neither daddy nor Sonia had been there. There were ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Grindelwald July 16th 2017

Today is our last day in Grindelwald and after consultation we decided that going to Spiez was a good option since there is a lovely castle and harbour to visit. We had a perfect day weatherwise. There was no wind and it was warm and sunny. We remember the Spiez Schloss as a place we took the boys tonwhen they were young and it being a particularly nice castle. It isn't huge and isn't grand but is well preserved and in a great setting. We had often visited the gardens and surrounding vineyards in the past but not always bothered with a visit inside. On arrival we picnicked in the gardens outside the castle which are currently planted in lovely bright flowers. Our visit to the castle followed and didn't cost us anything as it was ... read more

It's was good day for a hike so we decided on our most favourite trail in this area which is from Schwarzwaldalp down to Meirengen. We got the subsidised bus up to Grosse Scheidegg which is a steep and winding ride with the claxon horn warning on bends and hidden parts of the road to oncoming traffic and bikes. The view from the Scheidegg is wonderful looking back down to Grindelwald in the distance. It sits right under the Wetterhorn mountain with sheer convoluted rock faces straight up like the Eiger. This countryside really is magnificent with soaring peaks and rock faces all around. Since we had the kids with us we got the bus down to Schwarzwaldalp where it flattens out and then is a few kilometres down to our destination. Our walk started across ... read more

I had hoped to have combined today's blog with yesterdays but we saw so much that it warranted a separate blog. The day started with rain showers in the mountains and a forecast for possible showers out of them so the Open Air Museum seemed to be a good choice where we could be outside or inside. Down in the town today was the early start for the Eiger Ultra Trail. This is an amazing race. The Ultra race is 101km and goes up to First, down to Bort, up to and over the pass to the Faulhorn, down to Burglauenen, up to Mannlichen, over to the Eiger Glacier, to Pfinstegg and down to Grindelwald. Wow, this is seriously hard. There are other races but this is the most challenging. The village centre has been transformed ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Trient July 14th 2017

In Trient and happy to be so. Another good day's walk, as we settle into routine. Breakfast, walk up, walk up, walk up, walk along, walk down, walk up, walk up, walk along, walk down, walk down, oops forgot somewhere in there there has to be an icypole or two, arrive, shower and feed. But now we are seeing familiar faces although some are huffing and puffing as much as us so the greeting is usually a nod or a wave rather than a long conversation. Unusual accomodation today. Very 'Fawlty Towers'. Some bits were quite good (evening meal soup was really good) but others were at the best unusual (huge room but nothing but a bed, single chair and a wardrobe with no hangers in it. The room was as white as Mt. Blanc with ... read more
