Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

There’s no good reason to have Run with the Bulls other than it seemed like a good idea at the time. Hemmingway must have seen something genius and manly about the festival of San Fermin and wasn’t old Ernest considered a Man among Men? Either way, it really wasn’t as scary as the Blooper reel you’ve seen on TV would indicate. Can you die while running with the Bulls? Yes. Can you get gored by an angry Bull and become paralyzed? Yes (and in fact someone did a few days prior to my run). But then again there’s an element of [View Full Entry]

Fake Merrill
San Fermin!
Partied Too Hard

7/7/06 10:08pm Newark, New Jersey Tarmac. I’m sitting on the 767 right now finally flying to Madrid. It began as a comedy of errors, like most travel does these days. We got the airport in plenty of time to relax, go through security and we were both aghast that neither of us got searched. Then promptly found the Tequileria bar and proceeded to pound a few tall Dos Equis and tell everyone within shouting distance that these two gringos were headed to sure oblivion in Pamplona to run with the bulls! We even started singing that stupid cheer from the Mexican [View Full Entry]

Train station in Madrid

San Fermines, well what can I say, it´s a non stop, crazy party. There are close to a million people running through Pamplona which city of 200,000 people. Everyone is dressed in white with their red bandanas and belts. Every year it starts on the 6th and lasts for a week. The running of the bulls start at eight and it last only a couple of minutes until they enter the bull ring. I thought I could party but this kicked my ass. On the first night we didn´t sleep until 10:30 and the next day I was so tired but [View Full Entry]

RUN RUN RUN

6 days, 1200 people, ???? tents, ????sangria,???? beers, no sleep, long bus rides---sound interesting--- well it was and I'd do it again. We left for Pamplona on day one, not a good start on both our parts by taking the right bus but not getting off at the intended stop. A extra train ride and we were at the bus pick-up point 20 minutes later than we should have been. No problems there, straight on the bus and off to Pamplona. A 20 hour bus ride was taking its toll straight away when we realised no air conditioning was the call [View Full Entry]

A hot protester
not so hot protesters
and the week long drinking marathon begins

San Fermin Festival, Pamplona, 2006 I hadn’t planned to start out this way. Still quite substantially wrecked from the previous 2 nights inebriations and sleep deprivation, I boarded the coach in London for the 22 hour journey to Pamplona with a blank mind in more than one sense. However, it seemed the same for many others also so it was more a case of letting the intoxications continue rather than commence. For the next 8 days we, collectively to be known as Bus 4 (it’s a coach not a bus!), are to reach, push and ultimately break the limitations of our [View Full Entry]

Hola!

Huevos Numero dos: Hola! A blog a day keeps the doctor away! We found an internet gaff which uploads the photos PDQ so am taking advantage of this over next couple of days. Drive through the 'pair of knees' was totally amazing. We stopped several times to savour the fresh air, take in the splendid views and listen to the Heidi music coming from the ( what sounded like) millions of cow bells chinking along. I could almost see Clara in her wheelchair, Peter with his twisted little face, and the old Alm Uncle whittling away at bits of rough edged [View Full Entry]
