Overnight Stop in Trujillo (Tim and Sue) We have arrived in Trujillo and decided to stay in the Parador there - for those that don't know, this is like staying in a castle that's been turned into a hotel. It's a really nice place and after a couple of nights sleeping on the ferry vibra-bed we're both looking forward to a stationary kip, so-to-speak. All the years Sue has spent living in and travelling to Spain she has never stayed in a parador so she was super excited! After our 'coupley moment' earlier on it's become apparent that I'm suffering from caffeine withdrawal. Upon arrival at Trujillo, it become further apparent that I'm going through Google Maps withdrawal and the visceral horror of not having an always-on internet connection hits me. We're also becoming a bit ... read more

This weekend, we went on a school trip to various towns in Extremadura, which is the province above Sevilla. Check out the map I added. We started on Friday morning. The bus left for Merida, which is a town that is famous for its well conserved Roman ruins. They have a gorgeous amphitheater and a theater. The theater is the best conserved Roman theater in Europe. There is one that is also well preserved in Northern Africa. It was very pretty. Then we went to the Roman museum that is also there. The museum is so beautiful. It was a little hard to stand because we were all starving when we were at the museum and I am really sure that everything has to be physically perfect for a museum trip to be tolerable. If you ... read more

The next stop on our trip was Trujillo. This is a smallish town in Extremadura. I think it is fair to say we are well off the English tourist trail and we do need to use our rather bad Spanish. We are in the nicest hotel so far. It is an old convent that is now a 4* hotel. The conversion has been done well and there are some super modern lights and art work which look really good. The room where we had breakfast used to be a chapel. Impressive! The problem with such a nice hotel is that we tend to stick out. The rest of the guests are well heeled Spanish tourists and don't seem to have the rucksacs, hats and trainers that we have! I think they must be wondering where we ... read more

It's raining, it's pouring... why are we not surprised?! Today is officially the first day of Autumn, although we've already had the central heating on for a week. Still, on Monday I'm off to sunny Spain!! The town I'm going to is called Trujillo, in the region of Extremadura. Not many people have heard of Extremadura, but it's the region which borders Portugal and is north of Andalucia (where they have lots of flamenco dancing). Basically, south of Madrid, but north of Sevilla. Oh, go and look it up in an atlas... According to the official town website, which may be slightly biased, Trujillo is the most beautiful and unspoilt of all the conquistador towns. Several famous explorers, including Francisco Pizarro (who discovered Peru), came from Trujillo, and the lovely houses they built on their return ... read more
