Well, after yesterday's effort, it was decided the prudent thing to do would be to get to Burgos the easiest way possible. In light of the fact that we had done nearly 4 kms of this stage, and that many people ere travelling the last 5kms on a bus, as it's through suburbia on concrete paths, we figured we weren't missing much by ringing a cab. It was great ! We arrived in Burgos at 9.30, dropped off the packs, and went to sort out the essentials before the shops closed. Irena posted stuff home, John bought a phone card, I bought some boots ( I hope they are good, only time and kilometres will tell; they feel OK ), and we headed to the Cathedral. Irena only stayed about 10 minutes, I don't think checking ... read more

Well, we didn't get bedbugs, so I figure the blurred red marks on my sheet may have been an 'inconsistent ' part of the floral print pattern rather than stains; I hope! I slept pretty well and was on the road again at 6.45. The day was meant to be hot and it was, so it's better not to be wandering around in Spain in the heat of the day with no shade in sight. Today we walked for extended periods on tracks next to highways but I don't think it affect the peaceful nature of the walking and there were numerous villages to have a break at, or just pass through. Yesterday I rebought all the toiletries necessary as I thought l had left my toilet bag at Nájera. The bag was the only item ... read more

19 -20 September 2016 Monday and Tuesday. Burgos I ended my last blog with my arrival in Burgos...two days early because I had to take care of my sprained ankle and rest if I was going to be able to walk the final 100 km from Lugo to Santiago, and thereby earn the Compostelo. In my original planning I had intended to make the segment of my Camino between Burgos and Lugo less walking and more sightseeing as I was going to be passing through many historical cities. I did´t want to arrive at any of them so in pain or exhausted that I would´t want to leave my albergue. So this blog covers this phase of my Camino. My first order of business on Monday was to make an appointment with a physical therapist...located conveniently ... read more

Stilaan komen we in ons gekende ritme. ... read more

In the last week in southern France, we have been feeling forty plus degree heat. With the sun holding a searing blowtorch to the landscape right up to sunset around 9:30 pm, and little or no shade in most of our campsites, we have been looking forward to a climb into the Pyrenees. Our route over the last few days has been from Pau in south-west France toward the city of Pamplona in north-west Spain. So as we began to ascend the relatively gentle western crossing of the Pyrenees, it was a welcome change to turn off the cabin air conditioning as ambient temperature dropped to a comfortable 25 or so degrees. Then I flicked the headlights on as fog bought visibility back to less than 50 meters. It’s good to take it slowly on these ... read more

A friend and I day-tripped to Ponferrada last weekend. It’s over the border from Galicia in Castilla y Leon, but only around a 2-hour train ride from Ourense. The small city itself is along the most popular Camino de Santiago route, the French Route, and when we were there, I was surprised by the numbers of pilgrims. When I say ‘pilgrims’, you might imagine dirty people dressed in rags and leathery, almost-disintegrated shoes, but today’s pilgrims tend to be a cleaner-looking set, generally white, middle-aged people with traveling backpacks and walking sticks. Ponferrada seems to be heavily-reliant on the pilgrim-tourist trade, but not overly so. What was concerning is that we encountered more locals who seemed to be down-and-out. Ponferrada’s main attraction is a castle built by the Knights Templar. I’m still not entirely clear on ... read more

We are really ‘coast’ people having lived all our lives close to the seaside. But today we are off into the great interior of Spain, a vast country where in the middle you would be hundreds of kilometres from the coast. Well perhaps the ‘great interior’ is a bit of an over exaggeration but we will be a good 150 kilometres as the crow flies when we get to our overnight accommodation in Cubillos de Sil. Our accommodation for the last 2 nights had lived up to its 9.8 rating on booking.com, until this morning that is. We are leaving our apartment unshowered as’ the hot water system broke down in the night’ as the pleasant man on the reception desk informed Gretchen when she went looking for the reason why the shower only ran cold ... read more

Remember there are more pictures after the end of the blog. In our hotel we see a sign in the elevator that says on Dec 24 and Jan 5 that the elevator is reserved for Santa Clause and the 3 Kings. Kings day here is the big day to give presents….. Nicky, Tim, Susan and I took off to grab a quick breakfast, get some money out of the ATM and find a present for Hector. I suggested a Smart Box. I love these and sure wish the states had them. You buy a type of book, like lodging, food, adventure…. And in it are a list of places all over Spain where you can get hotel nights, food or whatever the books says, for free. We bought an adventure book and a food book for ... read more
