1. Picos de Europa When Spanish mariners returned from their early voyages to the Americas, the first sight of land they had from far out to sea was that of the giant mountain summits just behind the northern Spanish coastline of Asturias & Cantabria. They called them ‘Picos de Europa’, and in 1918 became Spain’s first National Park. We were naturally drawn to these mountains, although there was also some anxiety about driving ‘Django’, our new to us, but rather bigger than our previous camper, through the mountain passes. However, we had our trusty guidebooks, and even a ‘Back roads of Spain’ driving tour, what could possibly go wrong? The gateway to the mountains from the East is Potes our first stop, and a visit to a fantastic information centre. The pictures show some of the ... read more

After walking the Camino de San Salvador from Leon to Oviedo, I continued onto the Camino Primitivo, which begins in Oviedo and passes through the Asturias and Galicia regions. It eventually joins with the Camino Frances for the final two days before reaching Santiago de Compostela, but time constraints only allowed me to walk the first 208 km from Oviedo to Lugo. This worked out well since I wouldn't enjoy walking with hundreds of pilgrims at the end of the French Way. It’s called the Primitivo because it was the first camino, not because it is the most primitive, though the accommodations are mostly basic albergues, which are like basic hostels - bunk bed, one big bathroom, little privacy. It’s busier than El Camino de San Salvador, with maybe 40-50 pilgrims in each etapa (stage). But ... read more

Most of my thoughts below only pertain to those considering walking the 120km El Camino de San Salvador, arguably the least walked and at times most remote of the caminos in Spain; otherwise, consider it fodder for my photos. I’m not going to give any directions or trail descriptions because they can easily be found free online. I paid $10 to download a very long pdf book from PilgrimageTraveler.com and it was pretty good. Most everyone else was using the Camino app, but I didn’t have cell service. Why not El Camino Frances? Last summer I walked a 5-day portion of The French Way - the walk that most people choose - and opted for a different approach this year. The biggest pro and con of choosing El Camino de San Salvador vs. El Camino Frances ... read more

We are heading for Bilbao but as it would be a long drive we decide to break the journey about half way at Oviedo. (note can't set Oviedo as a location for this entry so have picked Llanes on the coast). We chose Oviedo for convenience and because we find a reasonably priced apartment there. Doing a little checking I think, as this is a large place, I should also be able to find some BMW brake-pads somewhere here. We arrive before lunch so I have the whole afternoon to sort this out, but most places are closed until 3pm! Our apartment is on the 4th floor of a modern apartment block on the outskirts of the city. The neighbourhood is fine but a bit low on local colour, so I joke that it’s a little ... read more

Greg’s alarm wakes me with a start this morning and I am still in a deep sleep after such a full day of walking and climbing mountains yesterday. We’ve more mountains in store today as we plan to head through Covadonga and then the Picas de Europa mountain range. We manage to leave at 9.30am, which is not too bad when we had agreed to leave at 9am. Its only about an hour and a quarter to get to Covadonga and I am so thankful we don’t have another full on day of driving ahead. Not yet anyway. The weather is a mild 14 degrees and it’s dry, so driving conditions should be quite good, always a bonus when driving through the mountains. It’s easy enough to get to Covadonga and we follow the steep 15% ... read more

SC writes: Our guides on this trip are A) The RUTA (route) of our pre package Paradores trip; B) Lonely Planet - a downloaded large PDF file and C) Our own instincts for a worthwhile visit. Yesterday was a good one for C) as Cathy explains; CJ writes: We left the delightful Santillana del Mar relatively early today (ie somewhat after 9:30 - but this is a holiday after all!) and travelled just a couple of kilometres to the Museo de Altamira. This celebrates the discovery, in 1879, of a cave with the most stunning cave art created from 36,000 to 14,500 years ago. The cave itself is now far too fragile to admit the thousands who travel here every year (in the 1960’s well over 100,000 people a year!) and so an absolutely millimetre-accurate replica ... read more

The Spanish part of my adventure starts in Santiago de Compostela, which is normally an ending for other people’s journeys. It is the destination for one of Christianity’s best-known pilgrimages. The end point is the Cathedral where St. James’ tomb is placed. You can line up for half an hour to see the actual tomb and also hug/touch/pray all over the head of a large statue, which I am going to guess is also of St. James. Whilst in the line you can take in all of the gold gilding on the roof, which was unfortunately largely obscured by restoration works. You can also play the game with the short European ladies who think they can smile and walk straight past you in a line. A mother/daughter combo tried to tag team me, but I kept ... read more

Le premier site ... read more

... read more
