Ronda has been on my Spain bucket list since a good friend of mine who had studied abroad in Sevilla recommended it to me. These days, people tell me that places are beautiful, and I take it with a grain of salt—the places tend to meet my expectations—so many places in the world are stunning! But Ronda seriously overwhelmed me. Man, it is great. I took a train from Córdoba to Ronda on a Monday morning. The train goes past the increasingly popular (book tickets in advance!) ‘Caminato del Rey’, a cliffside walking path recently redone for safety reasons (intrepid explorers would try the off-limits path and then plunge to their deaths when the trail broke off). Sitting on the left side of the train gave the best views of it, but the views are sparse ... read more

Ronda ... read more

Geo: 36.742, -5.16641Good Day Everyone,Your trusty tourists descended on the little town of Ronda yesterday for a brief visit to a Three Star Bridge and the oldest Bull Fighting Ring in the world. The former captures three stars from Rick Steves. We are now questioning his ratings, but the bridge is an engineering feat. It was originally built in the mid 18th century but fell after six years (of course, this would have never happened if the Romans had built it). The next construction spanned over forty years being completed just before the dawn of the 19th century. As Bird and HP traversed this bridge, we reminded each other that the former bridge collapsed thus quickening our steps.... read more

It is now 10 days into the our holiday. Just over a quarter gone depending which way you look at it , three quarter full glass or quarter empty. We have tried to score our campsites but they are all so different making it very difficult to do so. Some have swimming pools , some better than others, some indoor most outdoors. Some have shops small and large and restuarants and take aways. Sanitaires clean and tidy others not so good. How do you score them? We have miserably failed most times if I am honest and we have given up. I shall call the camp we are on today Desperado. It is not called that it has a much nicer sounding name and is in the town of Santa Elena. It is in the heart ... read more

The town of Ronda sits about 2 hours ride west of Granada. The journey is made half the way by bus and then by train. A new high speed rail is being built throughout Spain so occasionally you have to slum it by bus while the track beds are being remade. We take a room at the Hotel Morales for 41 Euros a night. We've had better and we've had worse. The owner's name is Juan. He gives us a map of the town and some general directions. Ronda's claim to fame is the invention of modern bull fighting. Hemingway and Orson Welles both hung out here. Hemingway was a bull fighter groupie and Welles was thinking of making a film version of 'The Man of La Mancha' here. But then he died. Ronda is not ... read more

Issy sleeps in again. I don't know how. Someone started jackhammering the road outside our window in what felt like the middle of the night and they're still going. I have breakfast by myself again, the same as I did yesterday. I think the staff at the restaurant are starting to feel sorry for me. We decide that we'll try to hike down to the bottom of the gorge. Issy says that if we're going to do this she needs to buy some more suitable shoes. We Google "shoe shops" and find one nearby. Just as we get there Issy remembers that she doesn't have any socks with her to try the shoes on with. She spots a pair of shoes she likes and the shop assistant appears with a box in her size. He takes ... read more

We don't yet have bus tickets to get from Ronda to our next destination, which is Seville. We tried to book these on-line before we left home, but the system told us we were trying to do this too far in advance. I make the long trek to the bus station, and ask the man at the ticket window in my very best and politest Spanish whether he speaks English. He says "no" very aggressively. I then try to explain to him in pidgin Spanish that I want to buy two tickets to Seville. He suddenly gets very angry. He yells "Los Amarillos" and points heatedly to the ticket window next door. It seems that "Los Amarillos" is the name of a different bus company, and I'm starting to suspect that it might be a fierce ... read more

Issy tells me that I must sleep very soundly. She says that the noise from the Russians on the roof terrace kept going for a long time after I went to sleep. When we get halfway down the stairs we see that the Russians have taken over the breakfast room. Issy says that this is going to be awkward. She says that she really hopes that I was nice to them, and then makes me go into the room first. Thankfully they seem happy to ignore us and keep munching away on their food. The large number of empty vodka bottles on the terrace suggests that this might be because they're all struggling to remember me going up to ask them to be quiet at 1am this morning. This is probably a good thing. I wouldn't ... read more

Day 6 is SMURF day!!! And I was allowed to lie in until 7am!! Juzcar used to be one of the famous white towns which are dotted around the Spanish hillsides but then along came Sony Pictures. They were making a Smurf movie and wanted to paint a whole village Smurf blue. The residents of Juzcar voted and Sony must have spent a long time painting every building in town. When filming finished Sony came back to repaint the village but the residents voted for it to stay blue. Consequently Sony came back for the sequel and Juzcar gets more visitors now. It took a while to get there and not just because it's uphill and we have a Toyota Aygo. The roads were very bendy too so we got trapped behind the one thing that ... read more

As we're in an area famous for white towns, known as 'Pueblos Blancos' (although they generally have brown roofs which makes Glyn angry) we decided to head for a blue town. Not just any blue, but Smurf blue as we were going to Juzcar, where the two Smurf movies were filmed. Sony had asked the town if it was ok to paint it blue with the promise to return all to white once finished. But the town folk voted to keep it blue and so it remains awesome! There's Smurf paintings on the walls, and giant Smurf models scattered liberally around the narrow and steep streets for it is in the mountains. Also, it is. The entire town that is blue, not just a few streets as I'd expected. The town was practically silent and empty ... read more
