I took the trip to Bratislava with my Canadian friends hoping to watch the semi finals of the world hockey championships. That plan went down in flames when the Russians knocked out the Canadians in the quarter finals as we arrived on the Thursday night. That ensures that we hit up the pubs for them to console the fact that we won't be going to the hockey. The night life in Bratislava is buzzing. Many stag parties and many hockey fans chant on the streets and we find a sports bar to sit outside on the balmy evening where topless barmaids serve Russian groups vodka. The Russians all wear the oversized hockey shirts that still don't cover up their massive guys and man boobs that outsize the barmaids. We enjoy plenty of cheap pints and forget ... read more

I forgot to mention yesterday that this is now my 4th country of my trip. OK. Bratislava. My first (and final) day in the city. Very very beautiful. I decided to go on a free walking tour of the city along with a couple of Aussies from my dorm. All very interesting. The castle perched up on the hill is spectacular. However, my favourite building would have to be the Blue Church. It rises completely incongruously out of a run down area of Bratislava like something out of a fairy tale. Very beautiful. Tonight I´m going to go out and watch the Slovakia vs Slovenia Ice hockey game on TV in one of the numerous bars in the city that are showing it. Germany have already beaten Russia today. Tomorrow morning I get a hydrofoil down ... read more

OK. Plzen was a waste of time. City was a dump, hostel was crap and it took me 3 and a half hours to get back to Prague instead of the 2 it should have taken. No idea why, an explanation was given...in Czech unsurprisingly, which also unsurprisingly I didn´t understand a word of. Ah well. The other problem with the train delays was that it meant that I missed my 1 o´clock coach to Bratislava. I managed to get on to the 3 o´clock instead. This meant that I got into Bratislava at about quarter past 7. I got to the Presidential Palace via the directions from their website which I´d written down. I then had to ring them to ask where they were. I thought I understood what he said, walked off in the ... read more

Hi all, renton here. My turn to enthrall you with our explots from eurotour 2010/2011. To usher in the new year we left vienna and travelled to the luxury resort of bratislava slovakia. While this concrete metropolis envokes feelings of suicide its accually not to bad a place. Upon arriving at the campsite we found it was closed as you can see from the photo it was a litle chilly, so alternate accomadation had to be sourced. We were lucky enough to find an original cold war, one star motel with all the mod cons, fixed lighting that had to be plugged in and the windows that opened all the way (11 floors up). see attached photo for the aerial view of the faithful europig (magestic). We quickly set off for a walking tour of the ... read more

Bratislava, Slovakia Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is only 60 km from Vienna. The fertile country is flatter and is part of the Hungarian Plains. Farming still seems to be of the strip type. The EU dictates what the farmers are to grow, but they don't seem to hear the instructions. There are very many wind turbines - Beth estimated about 300 in one "farm". Our entry was over the New Bridge, built between 1967 and 1972 but the restaurant on top was not opened until 2005 because it gave great views of non communist Austria. Nearby was the monument to the victory over the plague and the monument to the 105,000 victims of the holocaust. The Synagogue was demolished to make way for the highway. We entered the old city through Michael's Gate. In a ... read more

Day 15-Budapest to Prague 8/31/10-Tuesday Want to know our weather? No you don’t. We had rain and cold today. You’ll see in the photos. We wound down our cruise today. Last night we had a nice cruise around Budapest on the Danube. We would have been happy to have a few more days here but we are excited about the next stop, Prague. The trip north was on a motor coach. There were about 35 people from the ship that were joining the final leg of our trip to Prague. The scenery was interesting but nothing unusual except for a large number of wind turbines. On the way to Prague we made a stop in our sixth nation, Slovakia. We stopped in Bratislava, the capital city. It is a city of about 430,000 people on the ... read more

Off early today on the bus to Bratislava in Slovakia. After 45 minutes on the bus, we stopped for a twenty minute break and visit to the WC (as they call it) in a large, new, very clean gas station, grocery store and restaurant (hard to tell which attracted the most business). Some Australians and I remarked on our practice at home of driving for at least a couple of hours without a break. The Australians’ theory was the distances are so short that a two-hour drive seems interminable. Anyway, minutes later we cross the border without being stopped, although we had been asked to bring our passports in case the officials wanted to check the non-EU passports. All the countryside was rural, mostly farming and wind farms – in all directions. The crops were corn, ... read more

Talk about confusion. Today has been full of it. To start, this is honestly the first time I've gotten horribly confused about European trains. I had to email my Slovakian tour company an ETA into Bratislava a couple of days ago, and used the Internet to figure out that I should be leaving Vienna from the Südbahnhof. Yesterday, though, I checked and my ticket to Bratislava says it's from Wien Westbahnhof to Bratislava via Kledering and Kittsee. Does such a train exist? No. Fortunately it's an open ticket, so no worries about time, which has been quite lucky. I got to the Westbahnhof and stared at the departure board for an extended period of time before realizing there was nothing departing for Bratislava. So I wandered over to the info desk and asked. Wrong station. Apparenty ... read more
