The Old Town and not much more The main reason for this trip to Italy was to visit San Marino. San Marino is one of the smallest independent countries in the world. According to CIA World Fact Book San Marino is the fourth smallest country in the world. Only Holy See, Monaco, Tuvalu and Nauru are smaller. San Marino is surrounded by Italy in all directions and could never find a way of telling an Italian from a Sammarinese. They look the same and speak the same language. There might be a cultural difference but I couldn't find any. Considering that the Italians have elected url=http://en.wikipedia.org... read more

Thursday 7th April 2011 Back on the road today with a drive south down the coast, across the Po delta to the oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world – San Marino. Officially known as the Republic of San Marino it has a population of 30,000 living in an area of 24 square miles. Its constitution was enacted in 1600 and is the world’s oldest still in effect. It is one of the wealthiest countries in the world in terms of GDP per capita and is in the enviable position of having the lowest unemployment rate in Europe, no national debt and a budget surplus ! Friday 8th April 2011 Morning school spent sketching designs for our Venetian Carnival masks. After lunch we catch the bus to the capital of San Marino – ... read more

Marinusa i mieliśmy tzw. free time. Szliśmy w górę i w górę mijając sklepki z pamiątkami i kupcami uśmiechającymi się do nas szeroko:) -Buy it, buy it ! The price is good ! Are you from Poland? Ohhh the price will be lower for you. - Oh, it's too expensive. Knock something off the ... read more

I’m exhausted. It’s a bad combination when you mix back-to-back eight-hour motorcycle rides and lots of snow. I’m staying with my friend Sara in San Marino and her visiting her Dutch amica Willers. They’re old friends, and I feel somewhere between accepted and a third wheel. When I arrived in San Marino, I was too jumbled and frozen to accurately describe my whereabouts to Sara over the phone. I flagged down a passing driver, who was able to interpret my location for Sara. Then the driver motioned for me to follow her, and led me about 3km back the way she had come, to a warm coffee bar where I would await further instructions. It took almost fifteen minutes for me to thaw out, and while I thawed, a tall, well-dressed friend of Sara’s came in ... read more

Today Mario made plans to take us to San Marino, which is a country on its own with its own flag and its own currency (well the cents are different from the euro cents) After shopping for groceries for dinner we headed off in two cars down the beautiful Rimini countryside to San Marino. San Marino is a little town and the main attraction there is the castle on top of Monte Titano(the highest mountain peak in San Marino). As it was almost christmas, there was a huge snowglobe with a scene of the nativity just outside the castle. Now we really had the christmassy feeling ( you know me, I'm a sucker for all this mooshy stuff!!) After a lovely(albeit rainy) day in San Marino, we headed back to the house, where I made dinner, ... read more

Oh, San Marino. Since Michael had worked a week less than I had and was spending his last two weeks doing a microstate tour, we had to go to San Marino while we were in Italy. He had already been to Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, and of course Vatican City. Not surprisingly, there’s really not a whole lot to do in San Marino. It’s a very tiny country with a population of only about 30,000. It is, though, up on a beautiful mountain and has three famous towers that you can hike to. Michael was very excited about these towers, but forgot to mention how much hiking would be involved in getting to them. Thus, he forgot to tell me it probably wouldn’t be a very good idea to wear a dress that day. Luckily though, I ... read more

WOW. Two blogs in two months? I'm on a roll! Speaking of rolls, try a caprese salad on a roll. The roundness makes it hard to eat, but it's delicious!! And Abby enjoys watching me eat it because I have a systematic way of eating it. The system is not foolproof but it is under development. So on Wednesday I left for Rimini and San Marino. It was nice, but I didn't achieve my goal of the trip: baseball. Rimini reminded me of Wildwood and kind of made me sad that I haven't been there in a while. I didn't really spend much time in Rimini except to sleep in my amazing (and amazingly cheap) hostel. Every day I took the bus out to San Marino to either explore or fail at trying to find baseball. ... read more

18 Sept 2008 After our not so enthralling visit to Bologna, where we just didn't seem to get the combination right, we were at odds as to what to do today. We didn't want to spend all day at the campground because Ky and I would soon get bored, and the day was not looking amazing, even though it was a little warmer. So shortly after lunch we drove out with the aim of going to Rimini, south of Ravenna, and perhaps stopping at the beach. We took the now familiar roads south past Ravenna, but once reaching the bypass to Rimini I was expecting a smaller town, and suddenly didn't feel like trying to find my way around yet another strange town (which I found later Kylie also felt the same, she having been doing ... read more
