Hi all. Actually I'm still in Helsinki (woops) Having had two different Finish Guys in my room so far, I arrived back yesterday afternoon to find an Aussie guy called Jeremy who was visiting Helsinki while his dad gave a speach at the Uni. I optomistically set my alarm for 6.30 and we headed off to the bars. Seeing as I didnt get in till 4.30 there was litttle chance of making the train; waking up still drunk and an hr late I ran to the Railway station only to find the next train to Russia was not till 5pm. So I have spent today sleeping the Helsinki Station and bumming round this internet cafe. Lesson learned, again.... read more

And so to the current Russian Capital, transport care of an overnight sleeper train, greeted at each carriage by a uniformed babuska. Our hopes of local banter hit a dead end when the two girls in our cabin spoke no English, and spent the night whispering to each other - they must have thought from the 4 words we knew in Russian (Yes, No, Thanks and Cheers!) that we were fluent. Jumped on the underground - I cannot emphasize how good it is compared to the London, and the architecture puts Tottenham Court Road Station to shame! Other than having to count the stations and pretty much guess where to get on and off (The Russians have no intention of making this easy and everything is in cryllic) the journey was relatively simple. Everything we have ... read more

I will tell people that a positive part of staying in Tver is how relatively close it is to Moscow, meaning it's easy to go there for the day whenever you feel like it. Having said that, every time I had been so far it had been planned a few days before, and I had someone to go with or meet me on the other side. So this morning when I woke up and had nothing to do I decided to buck the trend and go spontaneously, on my own. Luck was with me as I got to Tver station at 2 o'clock, only 7 minutes before the next elektrichka. The only thing I brought with me was my book, as three hours with nothing to do was bound to make me work. And work I ... read more

In Lyudmila Georgevna's lesson this morning we spoke about adoption, especially of Russian children to european and american families. It was good to have another debate as a group, and the articles we were given were useful. There are more than a million children in Russia with no parents. Some have died, many have abandoned them as alcoholism or drugs have ruined their own lives. Christa used to work in an orphanage in Russia, and said that the lady in control of it was as cruel as she could imagine. Natasha invited a lot of us to her dacha in the afternoon. I felt slightly guilty for leaving the flat again when I hadn't done any work for my essay, but on such a beautiful day an invitation to a summer cottage was too good to ... read more

First call on our rtw trip had to be Russia, starting nice and easy eh? After the introduction of Russian culture and attitude we encoutered at the Russian Embassy in London, we knew Russia would be somewhat different to our usual trips! Flew in to St Petersburg, rather nervous having our visa's checked in Stockholm enroute, but all was fine - we even remained optimistic as the plane was delayed unloading as we awaiting the Russia Interior Minister's arrival to let us out (bloody Russia). After swotting up the guide book about all the paperwork that we MUST get stamped on arrival to avoid problems when leaving the country off we went - and promptly realised that the Russian authorities had no intention of allowing us this stamp - oh well! After getting back from Moscow at 2 last night I didn't make much of an effort to open my books this morning. I had a relaxed day, walked to the shops and back a few times and cleaned the kitchen. I took my work outside in the evening and sat on a bench behind the statue of Lenin. It felt a bit lonely being the only one in the park not drinking beer with their friends. I had read a couple of pages when a voice came from above my left shoulder: "And who is here looking so busy?" When I looked up it was Lyudmila Giorgevna, on a walk with a friend of hers. I said it was for my university project (part of which is also her homework) and that reading an economics book ... read more

On Saturday April 29th Patrick and I arrived in Yekaterinburg station at 2am to board the next train on our Trans Siberian adventure. After a late night trip to the supermarket for some provisions we boarded the train at 3.30am. Our cabin was inhabited by two drunk Russians who scarpered when we arrived. They appeared to be having a bit of a party in our cabin so we were relieved that we were not going to be sharing the next 3 nights with them! Given the late departure time, we got down to the business of sorting out our beds and baggage without delay and fell asleep straight away. The next day was spent in leisure in our cabin and around the train. We still had no occupants in our cabin and a day having the ... read more

I went back to Moscow with Liisa this morning, to take the photos that I should have taken on saturday. We took the early elektrichka at 8.30 and were so tired that we barely said a word to each other for the three hour journey. For as long as my eyes were open the scenic route made a pleasant change to the industrial one, especially when we crossed over the lake. My first chore was to buy my ticket to Lugansk on the 17th, from Kievskii vokzal. Travelling from and around Russia is very affordable, so much so that a journey of about twenty two hours in a sleeping train with a bed cost me less than 500 roubles. Having said that I did ask for a place in the most simple carriage, so it will ... read more

Today followed the same pattern as the last few. I got up late, and read and wrote a part of my essay in my kitchen without ever really getting anything done. It doesn't help that one of the books I found to research from doesn't have an index, or even chapter headings. I went back to the river with Liisa at 8. We sat on the stone wall for an hour, talked and drank beer, while the sun went down over the bridge. ... read more

My work went a bit quicker today, but slowly nonetheless. It's one of the reasons why I'm feeling stressed at the moment; I've lost a lot of weight lately but it has made me weaker rather than healthier. When I went outside it was too hot for a jumper. Every street is a catwalk for the girls, in big sunglasses, mini-skirts and almost see-through tops. The temperature today was as far above zero as it ever was below it, while I was in Russia during the winter. The river has become the centre of town, especially in the evening, with lots of people leaning against the stone wall next to the Volga and drinking with their friends. A 'party boat' takes people along the river, with a bar and even a disco on board.... read more
