In retrospect, I kinda forget what attracted me to Ekat, A city famous for the brutal murder of the Romanov family, the last Tsar and co, and a gang war in the early 1990's. And rocks if you're into that sort of thing. On arrival at the Meeting Point (or place, I forget) Hostel, an excellent little place run my Katya, possible the nicest and most helpful hostel owner of all time I was amazed to find real Tea - none of this Russian Churney Chai much, proper British tasting tea, with Milk and everything! Milk tasted a little funky, but I guess some things will never be the same as at home! Initially I hit the town for a find my bearings acclimatisation walk, which included my first and only attempt at Museum going in ... read more

We arrived around 8 PM in this city of 1.5 million inhabitants and considered the third capital of Russia. Ural mountains are rich in minerals, no wonder that Yekaterinburg is an industrial city with steel, machinery and in Soviet times weapon industries. There is nothing touristic here and this is precisely what is nice, at least we can see and to some extend experience the life of a 'real' Russian city. This city is however known for some important historical events. It is here that in 1918, the last Tsar Nicolas II and his family spent their last days and where assassinated. They are now considered martyrs by the Orthodox church and declared saints. A cathedral was built on the place where they were killed and there are icons with the whole family presented as saints. ... read more

Waiting at Yaroslavski station I inadvertently discovered the best tactic for avoiding hawkers and beggars all after your cash - Be French. Someone came up to me trying to sell me some tat, and when I didn’t respond asked me “speak English” “No. err…Little.” “What Language?” Didn’t really think this one through did I… for want of anything better to say, “ Je parle Francais” “Oh! Francsikiii!? Ah…” And promptly walked off leaving me in peace. Jackpot! Confusingly Ekaterinburg is still called Sverdlosk on the rail network, the towns old Soviet name. After 20 years you’d have thought they get round to changing the timetable but anyway… Anyway, I managed to board the right train, starting my first real train trip, 53 hours to Ekat. My first sighting of the train showed this really was a ... read more

So......I left Moscow on March 30th headed for Yeketerinburg. Back on the trans-siberian train, this one number 26. Wasn't going to be as plush as the last (number 1)....they get worse the higher the number. Another overnighter, got on at 16:20 and arrived next day 18:58 Moscow time (20:58 local). The roomies this time weren't as cheery as the drunken army fellas from the last train. They were a 70 year old couple with 3 and a half tonne of luggage. Sweet couple, I only had to scream "SHUT THE FCUP I'M TRYING TO SLEEP" once.......what is it with oldies and 5am starts. Maybe me dad can answer that.......dad? Anyhoo, back to Yeketeringburg (or ekaterinburg.....depending which sign you're looking at). This place got its name because of one of the the "greats"....Peter the Great got St ... read more

The train from Irkutsk to Yekaterinburg took 48 hours and at 4pm on Wednesday we arrived. We met our guide, Yadia, and she took us for a tour around the city. She firstly took us to a gem museum which displayed one man's lifetime collection of precious stones and gems. There were so many of them and it was really impressive. There were also lots of really detailed little ornaments in bright colours which looked painted but were made solely using the stones with no additional materials. After the museum we were taken to the centre of the city where Yadia showed us a bridge where newly married couples padlock engraved locks to the bridge and throw the key into the river to demonstrate their commitment to each other. The tradition is that if any of ... read more

I spent three whole days in Yekaterinburg at the end of February, 2009. I remember how very sad I was waiting for the night train. Russia is a very large country, and traveling by train could take whole days and days, but the trip to Yekaterinburg took only seven hours or so, you know, it is very close to my homeland. Lately, I began to dislike the time before train. By now, 100% of my travels were fulfilled alone, except some cases when I spent a little time with people, for example, I met with a girl in Sochi. But usually I walk and travel alone. So, I listened to music while waiting for the train; it came some 30 minutes late. One more thing - there were seats, and it is rather uncomfortable to sleep ... read more

15.10.08 Today is time to see what Yekaterinenburg has to show, and we have plenty of time. The start of the day is amazing. When Anatolij knocks on the door saying “breakfast is ready” we can hardly believe it! You would never expect it in a hostel, imagine there! Wonderful. Coffee, juice and plate with omelette, cheese and toast are waiting for us on the table. He sits with us an is a good opportunity to have a chat. He's learning English so we can communicate and we find out he's been running the hostel only for a few months and despite the fact we're currently the only guests, it seems like is going pretty well. With big bellies and big satisfaction we set ourselves ready to go. The weather is not too bad and just ... read more

"Byegaaj!" At first I didn’t understand what she was trying to say to me and I smiled and handed her my ticket again. Then, with a look of distain, the large, lips ticked provodnitsa pointed down at my bag and I realised that she was demanding my luggage. This rotund lady, dressed like a pilot from the 70’s in a blue, winged uniform was to be the first of many to set me off on journeys on the largest leg of my journey to get home. I began to feel rather overwhelmed by this seemingly humourless lady, the big, dirty train, covered in words I could not read. The dark station in Ulaan Bataar, where men scuttled around with large bundles and smoking soldiers all around stared out of shadows at me seemed to take on ... read more

14.10.08 Km travelled 6464 The night has been absolutely horrible like every one that precedes an early departure. We arranged for a taxi the night before to pick us up, so few minutes after 6.00 am a young lady was waiting for us outside the hotel door. The sun comes out late here and it was still completely dark. It started raining as we arrived to the station. For some reason unknown to us, we had first class tickets. It was good actually, we had table, room for all our bags, comfortable seats, and TV! Still, it's been very tiring. Michael managed to sleep leaning on the window, at least for a while. We had some breakfast bought the night before at the supermarket. On the screen they showed first a Steve Martin movie, but not ... read more

Hello All, We arrived in Yekaterinburg late last night after a 36 hour journey from Krasnoyarsk. As opposed to being accompanied by rain, it is quite cold here. The Russians are all wearing coats and we can feel a shopping expedition coming on for warmer clothes. I suppose though that what we think of their winter coats are really summer jackets. Yekatarinburg makes a welcome change from Siberia - this town is much more geared up for tourists - we've found a coffeeshop with an English speaking waitress. It has to be said Krasnoyarsk was only interesting in ensuring we knew Siberia isn't necessarily a nice place to live in. It was much grimmer than I expected it to be and certainly not geared up for an influx of English speaking tourists. Following on from my ... read more
