We arrived in Ulan-Ude about 6 am. We had a home stay with Andrey and Svetlana. Andrei picked us up at the station. At their home we had a good breakfast with pancakes that Svetlana had prepared for us . We had some rest and about 11 we left with Andrey to visit the Atsagatsky Buddhist Lamasery. The last Tzar also consulted the Lamas in this temple. The journey from the city to there was really enjoyable. Siberia finally unfolded under our eyes. The landscape is barren but with abundant wildlife. After the Lamasery we visited a Buryat village . Ghelya greeted us at the gate of her log cabin with green tea and milk. The Buryats were nomads in the past. Like the Mongolians they are very proud of their dairy products. That part of ... read more

Today we visited Ivolgin Datsan, a budhist monastery some 30 km from Ulan Ude. There are few temples and budhist monks. Yes, budhist. It is some community of indigenous "buryats" who are leaving in this region, basically the mongol people. It was nice. First time we saw something like that. We met also 3 people from Czech rep. . 2 ladies, 1 man. All of them about 70 years old and also travelling by trains through Russia ! And also by "marshrutkas", which are the minibuses. You just wave your hand, and if there is some place left, the driver will stop. (it is for some 10 people). Cheap, very fast, very frequent. No timetables needed. We read about the war in Georgia. There is some higher police presence in the streets. Even in the restaurant, ... read more

we are just sitting in a very modern internet "kafe" - 21 inches LCD monitors, fast connection, card readers, super headsets ... and 1 min is 1 RUB (and it was told to us even in english !! :) Ulan Ude is in general much more "civilized" than Irkutsk. Although it is smaller than Irkutsk, this is the 4th internet kafe we have seen, while in Irkutsk there was just one (and perfectly hidden). And also the city is more clear etc. And finally fine prices. Nice meal in a fast food (chicken, rice, juice) - about 2.50 euro. Traditional drink on the street "kvas" - 0.30 euro/0.5l. Here there is also a large community of Mongolian people. Seems that most of the population. There is even a Irish pub ! And Italian restaurant. And one ... read more

From Olchon island we came back to Irkutsk, got tickets to Ulan Ude. Traveling all night. We found a hotel. The old socialist style. It was cheap. Now we know why. You have to pay even for the shower something extra - 40 RUB. Therefore I would not call it a hotel, but well ....... read more

Woke up this morning at around 7 and had cereal in a cup and coffee for breakfast. When we got off to use the toilet we discovered that we only had 2 carriages and no engine, we had been abandoned! The guards arrived at about 7.45 and waited on the platform smoking and chatting away to themselves and the dodgy looking money exchange man, until they decided to check our cabins and passports at around 9. A little later on we were joined by an engine which took us and our guards across to Naushki on the Russian side of the border. The countryside here at this time of the year could easily be mistaken for the central north island of New Zealand until you come across the houses which are a little different, once again ... read more

We made it to Ulan Ude promtly at 06.15am and were met on the platform by a man called Andre who we assumed was our driver. Turns out he is actually also our host at our next homestay along with his wife Svelta who was also to be our guide. We ate an early breakfast and had a nap and a shower and had to be ready for 1030 for our visits. Ulan Ude was closed to foreigners up until 1991. Its so close to the Mongolian border that a lot of radar and military posts are based in the surrounding hills. It is also famed for having the largest Lenin bust in existence. The city has a pretty extreme temperature range from -40C in winter to +35C in summer. During the winter, the homes are ... read more

After four and half days in motion, Laura and I finally touched down yesterday afternoon in Europe. All I can offer here are a few mildly humorous observations about the numerous people we met on the way, and some casual remarks about the journey itself. Neither of us went mad. I didn’t sink into my soul and rummage clumsily around, rearranging my personality and the structure of my conscious mind. Nope. It was not a great voyage into the depths of our respective souls or anything that some people might hope a journey like it could be. We got on, played cards, read, chatted, smoked, ate, slept, toileted, wrote, listened to music and sang, and it was enjoyable and comfortable nearly all the way… We boarded in Ulan Baatar with an English couple and a ... read more

Ulan-Ude is the last city I visit in Russia, it is located near the border of Mongolia. After been here several hours this place is still weird to me. More than half of population here is Buryats, a mongolian people that been divided into the Sovjet. Now centuries later, every asian-looking person on the street speaks russian. The other half are white peobple and mixed with exotic/weird looks. I don't know why I am fascinated of a such a mixed society of whites and asians, I could just watch them all day long. There are not many foreign tourists in this town, I actually think I am the only one don't speak russian, at least at this holiday low-season, and as usual I drew some attention with my enormous 30kg backpack walking around the town. Otherwise ... read more
