Exactly one month from today I will be home. Right now I'm feeling like I'm going to be more than ready when the time comes to leave. I'm enjoying Moscow and have been seeing a lot lately. However, my hozyaika is really starting to irritate me. Most of the time she is really nice, likes to have long talks with me, and often lets me try different things she cooks (even though I don't pay for food). But I think my hozyaika has lived alone way too long and thinks that there is one right way to do any particular thing. When I fail to follow the particular right way she gets upset and will lecture me forever, not listening to what I say, and will continue lecturing me until I walk away. This is a ... read more

Before arriving in Moscow, we should've booked a hostel over the internet, but we didn't, which in hindsight was a bad idea! Everything was written in the Russian alphabet, and nobody spoke English, and we immediately found people quite rude. Someone eventually told us where to find an internet cafe in broken English so that we could get directions to a hostel. We printed out a map of the moscow metro, and managed to find a hostel (about 6hrs after arriving at the train station!). It was a funny hostel, which wasn't technically a hostel, as there was hardly ever any staff there, but we got a key so we could come and go as we pleased- fairly apt as the hostel was called "Home from Home". Didn't do much in Moscow apart from going to ... read more

Greetings from Moscow! Sorry I have been so slow to write! We made the trip in good shape and our Golden Retriever, Riley, seems to like the cool Moscow weather as well. We are staying at the Marriott Aurora in downtown Moscow and I have been enjoying a nice 30 minute walk home from TNK-BP. Today we woke to a blanket of snow several inches deep, the snow storm that lasted most of the morning but the weather now has turned cold. We have found a nice flat - only three blocks from TNK-BP that has a view of the city and a great floor plan. I think we will enjoy living in the city, there’s a lot to do- Museums, shops, and parks everywhere. The Traffic is horrendous so walking is a way of life ... read more

It has been interesting to hear everyone's tales of their adventures. Other students traveled to Romania, Hungary, Estonia, Amsterdam, Israel, and England. Ironically enough the only student who had a serious problem during her trip went to England. Someone stole her purse on the metro. In it was all her money, her passport, Russian visa, and other important documents. Without these documents she cannot return to Russia. So for the last week she has been going to the American embassy everyday waiting for her new documents to arrive. She is still in England. Things have been going okay since I got back. I miss Ukraine a lot. It was so nice to live as part of a family for a while. And I miss the warmer weather-it is getting pretty cold here. And of course I ... read more

Not an exciting day here, but I got done what I wanted to do. I went to Moscow last night to take some pictures, which I am posting for you to see. It is getting colder again and they are calling for snow tomorrow. Today, I slept in, cleaned, put a roast in the oven, and headed to the market. I walked two of the markets and finished up all of my shopping for my trip home. I put some laundry in, rented a movie and ate dinner. It only took three movies before we found one that played in English. I waiting on the last load of laundry so I can hang it to dry then I am off to bed. Tonight is time change for us, not sure about those of you in the ... read more

I took the train to/from Moscow all by myself today without too many problems. I was actually proud of myself for making it on my own. I tried to surprise Dasha, but she did not take the train today to classes so I was on my own. On the way there, I got to the station about 35 minutes. I think the lady understood me the first time, but I asked for a ticket to Moscow a couple of times until she was hitting the desk "asking for money." I am glad I knew about how much because I did not understand a word she said. I then walked about the market for a few minutes to kill time and stay warm as it was snowing this morning pretty hard. Hard enough, it would have caused ... read more

You can buy just about anything cheaper in Moscow than you can buy it in the States. It is just a matter of knowing where to find something. It isn't hard to find very expensive clothes but it is far harder to find inexpensive clothing. But I have been in Moscow for 2 months and by now have figured out where to buy things. Yesterday I went to Garbushka, Moscow's largest electronics store. I read that a mere 10% of what is sold there is legal. But that really isn't too different from any other electronics store-pretty much everything is pirated in Moscow. You can buy newly released American DVD's for $5. Newly released computer games like Heroes 5 sell here for $10. It is actually very difficult to find software that hasn't been pirated. But ... read more

Yesterday was an interesting day. It started out fairly normally. I went to lunch with everyone at the cafeteria and it was about the same as usual. As usual the "Coat Nazi" yelled at all of us who tried to sneak our coats into the cafeteria and made us go out of the cafeteria and hang out coats in the coat room. She always patrols around the cafeteria on the look out for coats. She seems to consider it the main duty of her job. And, as usual, the cafeteria ladies put sour cream in the borsch. I didn't tell them fast enough that I wanted to have borsch without sour cream. Russians think it is very strange whenever people ask for soup without sour cream. My previous host mom always used to lecture me about ... read more

On Friday my parents came to visit. It was so wonderful to see them. It had been 2 1/2 months since I had said goodbye. When they first came it was rather hectic because we left a half hour after they arrived to meet up with my group. All of us went on a tour of the Kremlin and armory. The Kremlin is gorgeous with all sorts of old churches and buildings that politicians meet in. It was an interesting mix of old and new. Afterwards we toured the armory. There were all sorts of old swords, corination gowns, crowns, and carriages. I liked seeing the crowns the most. They were gold, studded with jewels, and are lined with expensive fur. Afterwards me and my mom and dad went to one of the best Russian restaurants ... read more

Well, it finally snowed here. It may have before today, but today was the first I saw it. We were taking one of the consultants back to the airport and as we got out to get his luggage, it started snowing. They were small wet flakes, but it was snow. Afterwards Misha dropped me off at the Metro to bum around the city. I had planned to go to StarLight (Bryant will know what I am talking about) for an "American" breakfast but never made it there as I got hungry and wanted a cup of coffee before then so I find a small cafe that had an English menu and had the Captains CCM omlet, basically a Denver omlet and no, I do not have a clue what Captain CCM stands for but that was ... read more
