First, to clarify: Boulevard (self explanatory), Strada (Street), Calea (Way), Piata (Square)... Sunday, November 30 was election day. Monday, December 1, was a national holiday celebrating 90 years since Romania united its provinces (more or less). This is why there are a lot of flags out and about. I started a long walk from Boulevardu Tineretului, up to Piata Unirii, and then cut over to Stra... Read Full Entry

Church on Strada Blanari

I am not sure about the exact name of this church, but it is right on the other side of Hanul cu Tei.
Improvements, continuedImprovements, continued
Improvements, continued

As you can see, the building, like many others in the area, is rich in architectural detail and charm, but sorely needs to be renovated after being abandoned and vandalized. One can only hope that the corrupt system will not screw over our historical heritage.

I am not sure which building this was taken from, but it was in the area.

Self-explanatory.

Hanul cu Tei Street

This is a lovely little street that is full of art galleries, which, unfortunately, were closed due to the national holiday.

Strada Lipscani

Lipscani used to be my favorite street because it is full of fabric stores and tailor places with cobblestones that was closed to cars. Now, as you can see, it is a disaster. You have to get by on these wooden platforms that are really shadily built. It is unclear what kind of work they are actually doing there.

Caru cu Bere

Caru cu Bere is the oldest beerhouse in Bucharest. It has always been a meeting place for students, intellectuals, and probably drunks. It is very atmospheric inside.

The church of St. Stavropoleus is found on the street of the same name. Caru cu Bere is down the street.

Now CEC banc

In a typical misues of beautiful buildings in Romania, it now houses CEC bank instead of being open to the public.

Contrast

I wanted to contrast how the city looks. The turn of the century CEC bank is located next to a modern glass building. Yes, it is another bank. This country has too many banks and casinos, which is a strange but convenient combination, I guess.

This is a banner flying over the History Museum, which is across the street from the CEC bank, on Calae Victoriei.

Victoria

Victoria is a really strange little store. It is like a mall, in which there are different stores on each level. It is singularly Romanian in that inside, everything is jumbled together, with each sales person having little booths right next to each other.

The Valley of the Kings

An odd little passageway off Calea Victoriei, it is named "The Valley of the Kings". Inside, there are shops and cafes which are all ancient Egyptian themed.
