Gretchen is always saying that her 'travel fairy' comes to the rescue when 'she' is needed and you could say today was one of those days but more about that a little later. We didn't hear back from the guy who emailed to say he would be at the hotel at 8.30am to pick us up for a tour of the Delta so we will play it by ear when the time comes or head on down to the wharf area again and see what is available for other trip opportunities including the guy who said he could take us subject to him having other bookings or others turning up to make the trip worthwhile financially for him. We were smart about having breakfast and 8.30am came and went without anyone turning up to take us ... read more

It is farewell to the Black Sea today although at Tulcea we won't be that far away from it.In fact it is farewell to the seaside for some time as our planned journey will now start to take us through countries that only have a coast on their western side if at all and our plans are to stay east at least while we are travelling north. The plan was to take the E87,the main road north from Mamaia and we figured a couple of hours and we would be in Tulcea. The fog had basically lifted and as there were people down on the beach we headed down for one last look and some photos and video with people enjoying the sun again. For reasons known only to Victoria she decided to take us on ... read more

We woke up in our familiar airconditioned room with good beds and the huge private terrace. Once again, a well slept night in this room. Even though once or twice we woke up to adjust the air conditioner. We had the hostel's coffee+cereals breakfast and then started walking to the Augustine bus station to catch a bus to Tulcea. We got lost on the way just enough to miss the buss, but the next one left at noon, so no big deal. We did some blogging and snack shopping at the nearby shopping mall before the bus left. Once again, the weather was extremely hot, but the bus had at least some kind of airconditioning, so the trip was tolerable. On the countryside we even spotted few men riding with horse carriages still - old style ... read more

From Constanta it took us just 2 hours by maxitaxi to reach Tulcea. That was despite the police pulling the bus over and detaining us for 10 minutes or so. We don’t know what the problem was but we suspect it is part of a drive to get unsafe buses off the road. If that’s the case we can’t really complain. The bus station is on the edge of town on the banks of the River Danube (well, one of its many arms on the delta). We couldn’t be bothered looking around for a hotel in the midday sun so we jumped in a taxi and chose the cheapest one out of the Lonely Planet. The Europolis has since upgraded from 2 stars to 3 but when we picked up our rucksacks to leave after being ... read more

Just 90 minutes away from Tulcea lies the small town of Sulina. 90 minutes by fast hydrofoil down one of the Danube’s many arms, , double that if you take a slow boat. The scenery isn’t that much to write home about though so we recommend speed! In Sulina we were met from the boat by a guy offering us a room in a pension just 5 minutes walk from the jetty and, apparently 8 minutes walk from the beach. Something was lost in translation though as it took 15-20 minutes to get there and later we discovered it was a good half an hour to the beach! Maybe he meant by car, which seems a bit bizarre as there are few roads and fewer vehicles around!! We decided to take a room because it was ... read more
