I think it maybe feels as if this has not been one of our better holidays. So many things seem to have gone wrong. The weather for the first few days was unkind and Glenn has been unwell. Having said that there have been some wonderful things. Leon with its wall paintings and treasures in its museum, the Atlantic at Cabo, the pretty little Spanish town of Trujillo , the meal we ate there. We loved Bom Jesus and found Braganca with its lovely aire. Glenn has thought perhaps next year we may do something different and travel less but by Christmas he will have forgotten what he feels like. The Atlas, the camperstop book and the ACSI guide will be out and he will be planning again. I think a little like having a baby ... read more

Having received an invitation to attend Smart Travel 14 in Northeast Portugal is an honour, and I'm thrilled to be in the lovely city of Braganca with my generous hosts. Portugal is a country steeped in tradition with world class architecture, culture, gastronomy and wine, and the Northeast is home to the world famous port wine. There's so much on offer in this region the Portugese may just have a chance of civilising me! Everything travellers love about Western Europe is right here in the friendly Northeast, and my worldly hosts have left quite an impression. i suppose that's to be expected, as the Portugese ruled half the world during the height of the Portugese empire. So here I am, ensconced in Braganca and Mirandela for the duration of the event, and grateful for the opportunity. ... read more

Forgot to mention yesterday. Bob had to swerve the Tandy to avoid a 1metre long big fat green snake which was in the road as we got further into the National Park. It reminded me that when we were in Portugal on a fly-drive holiday in the late 1990s we were also in a National Park close to the Spanish border, a pretty wild area. As I stepped on the grass by the car to get in, something bit me on the foot. Don’t know what but by the time Bob had started the car my foot was double size and by the time he was a mile down the road my ankle was the same and it was rapidly swelling all my leg. ... read more

Clarissa Tomtom let us down again as we tried to get away from the coastal area and on to the road East. It seemed to take an age to get through the little, all cobbled, roads of Estela and onto the main road we had been looking for. We found the road eventually which was not the route Bob had originally planned but had had to change as we were starting from a point lower down the coast because of our change of campsite. We were supposed to follow a picturesque route along the river but the route we took had few points of interest. We were to pass the medieval city of Guimaraes. We’ve been there before in 1995 on our honeymoon so I thought it might be nice to drive through or at least ... read more
Typical church for the area
Guimaraes. Best and only photo I could manage as the roads were all closed off.
How on earth did Bob get Tandy up there without a scratch.
