Eergisteren kwam een lang reisverslag binnen van mijn zwager, die in zijn uppie door Frankrijk, Portugal en Spanje heeft gereden afgelopen oktober. Zoiets maakt bij mij de reislust weer wakker, maar ook de drang om weer eens wat belevenissen op “papier” te zetten. Er is zoveel gebeurd dit jaar. Niet dat het allemaal even interessant is voor jullie, ik zal daarom proberen de krenten uit de pap te presenteren. Wij doen nog steeds 3x per week ons best op de fitness, en ik ben nog steeds leerling Portugees. Al heeft dat laatste wel een andere wending gekregen. De taallessen voor niet-Portugees sprekende buitenlanders werden de laatste vijf jaar gesubsidieerd door de autonome regio Madeira. De leraar was daar speciaal voor aangesteld en opgeleid. Oma, hoe oud is jouw badpak al? Een jaar of twee, geloof ik. Jeetje... We hebben een drukke tijd achter de rug, onder andere met logé‘s. Eerst eind januari de oudste zoon met vrouw en dochtertje. Een bliksem bezoek van een weekend, gelukkig wel een lang weekend. Heerlijk dat we een ruime flat hebben en ze dus bij ons konden logeren. Het weer was half half, maar toch nog goed genoeg om allerlei leuke dingen samen te doen. Eind april kwam jongste zoon met vrouw en twee zoons, voor een week, en die konden ook bij ons logeren, geweldig toch? Het is altijd wel even omschakelen van je eigen gang gaan naar intensief met zijn vijven of zessen bezig zijn. Ahoy from the happy ship M/S Zuiderdam. We only have one more sea day to go after today. Yesterday, I visited Madeira for the first time. What a lovely island. What a trial on my poor knees! We boarded our bus and stopped at the farmers market. These markets are always a good way to meet locals and see what fresh foods are available. Here, most of the fruits were imported from Venezuela and Brazil but the fish was freshly caught offshore. One of the strangest is a black fish, known as a snake fish. It is about three feet long with huge eyes and dangerous looking teeth. I hear it is delicious but can't attest to it. From there we climbed up steep twisting roads to the village of Monte. Magnificent Madeira Woke early to the ship making different sounds which meant we had slowed down and were not far from land. Cup of tea with stolen cookies from the buffet yesterday while we watched the sun rise over part of the archipelago of Madeira, three smaller islands rose up over the horizon followed by the stunning sight of the lush green island of Madeira and the port of Funchal. The Epic docked imposingly alongside the Costa Delicioza and the MSC Sinfonia, Epic by far the biggest. A quick bite of breakfast before debarking and making our way onto the island.
