November 1&2: It's amazing the pretties things that you're all consumed with; like this time last year all my worries were about my boyfriend, my physics grade, if my semi formal dance dress looked good and if people liked me...traveling has put so much viewpoint in my life. I now understand that a misses turn on a map or a eating too many French fries (the answers is always inevitable "yes") is not (by any means) the end of the world, it's simply an addition to my life, to my journey. And right now, my journey through life is and has been exceptional. I mean, I'm currently sitting on a bus going through the Algarve in southern Portugal, having just visited the town of Taviera, where there was a castle and gorgeous bridges. This Morning I ... read more

On the road again...in the air again...off to Portugal again...!!! I am currently sitting on a flight to Faro, in southern Portugal, with my new friends: Jen from Canada and Magali from Belgium, both au pairs in Vigo with me. And along with it being a new city in a new country, it also happens to be: HALLOWEEN!!!! Thus, I have a pair of white sheer fairy wings tucked into the overheard compartment. These last few weeks have been nice, filled with fun times with the kids, busy and confusing school days, where I trudge to and from the university with my new friend--Leo, from Georgia--and attend a class filled with German students who have all studied Spanish at least three years longer than I have; bit all this I so with a big grin because ... read more

Day 36 25th September 2013 Lux : Camping – Turiscampo Algarve Steve was a lazy sod this morning and stayed in bed while I went out for a run. It was just a plain boring run, no exciting adventure today, unlike yesterday. On returning I was going to participate in aqua aerobics in the campsite pool, but I chickened out because I was scared that all the oldies would be better than me. Instead Steve and I went for a bike ride into town as we needed to get some food shopping. Sometimes food shopping is a chore but today it was very exciting, the supermarcardo ‘Spa’ was full of English goodies, hobnobs, lays crisps, pot noddle, Heinz baked beans this list goes on, the only thing I was allowed to buy was some squash/cordial which ... read more

Day 29 18thSeptember 2013 - Costa da Caparic, campsite Parque Da Csampismo. This morning we woke and went to the tourist information office to find out where campsites are close by, not free camping real campsites as we’re both in need of a real shower. There are a few campsites in the town – but a lot of them look like shanty towns, we have checked into the ‘posh’ one for the night, Steve named it the posh one as when we were getting prices it had a glossy pamphlet. There is nothing posh about this place, the showers are not great and once again there are no toilet seats on any of the toilets. After checking into the campsite and washing we set for the beach, the beach is not much of a beach though. ... read more

It has now been 1 yr since I moved to Portugal so I thought about writing a summary of what has happened, how things have been and what I'm thinking about the future. Those of you who are waiting for the blog post about my trip to Morocco (including Moroccan mafia, robbery by me, stoned babies and typical etch style adventures), this will follow in the near future. So, September 2012 I decided to move to Portugal and as always, time has flown by crazily quick. One full yr in Tavira has been eventful and at times challenging. I made an effort early on to make friends, join a gym, etc as having a social life is important to stop us from going insane. I also decided to take Portuguese lessons from the 1st week, something ... read more

August was the main summer month and a very busy one in the Algarve. With so many cars and tourists, it sometimes felt like London when I couldn't find parking spaces or spent an hour driving home on a 10 min journey. Let's summarize a few things that have been happening in August: There are a few decent clubs around which I've visited. The main one in Tavira is called "Ubi Bubi" (I know, strange name) and it's got a great vibe to it with the different themes and chillout areas outside. The last time I went I was very hungry .... as I am most of the time these days ... so I was delighted to find out they serve food. Not much on option of course, just non-nutritious junk, but I decided to go ... read more

Oh where oh where has my little phone gone... Oh where or where can it be? First time ever while traveling and I've lost my iPhone. Which is in a case that also has my debit and credit cards. Oops. Thankfully I keep my passport separate and even my cash elsewhere but still discouraging to think I've lost it. Last time I had it was on the coach, and I had dozed off so when we arrived I grabbed my stuff quickly. The hotel phoned my TD for me and they get back from an optional dinner at 9:30 so I'm waiting until then to either breath a sigh of relief or panic. Boo. Either way its terribly distracting to say the least. So here I sit nibbling on fresh grape tomatoes, nuts and crackers I ... read more

Southern Portugal 24 August 2013 After leaving Lisboa (Lisbon) and after an easy but long drive we found a camping park about 15 kms east of Portimao which was a few kms from the coast. It was called Camping Canelas. Wow, was this a surprise package. Perhaps because it was out ‘in the middle of nowhere’ and it was the summer holidays still, the camp site had a lot going on. As we were sitting having dinner, we heard live music being played. We went to investigate and found there was a singer and guitarist with electronic backing performing for everyone. There was a big dance floor and as there were a lot of Portuguese and Spanish people, it didn’t take them long to start dancing. Tom and I got up and danced, trying to remember ... read more

We left Cascais on Friday afternoon for an overnight sail down to Lagos. It was all very pleasant with good winds until I noticed at about 2am that my front port and starboard navigation lights were not working. I duly plodded down to the bow clutching my new bulb and discovered that the previous owner had broken the bulb fitting in the light housing and instead of going to the expense of replacing it had soldered the bulb directly to the wires……….I love that man, can’t wait to meet him again. We had to sail through the night without port and starboard lights so I switched the steaming mast light on just to ensure we could at least be seen from the front. Picked up some good winds in the morning and rounded Cabo sao Vicente ... read more

Today has been an unexpectedly delightful day!! We had booked the boys for a 2-hour morning fishing excursion with no other real plans for the rest of the day. Late last night the company sent us an email asking us would we be ok with a free upgrade to the 4-hour fishing trip. Well, yes, we would be ok with that. So, we got an early start off to Alvor which is only 10 minutes away and the boys got on their boat at 8:30 and headed off for a 1/2 day of fishing excitement! For this paragraph, I (Nigel) will take over writing. The fishing was an absolute blast. There was constant action. You were either re-baiting your hook, getting a nibble, striking to hook a fish, or else someone else was reeling one in. ... read more
