Note: All events described in this entry occurred from late September to early October 2006. For more updated entries and trips, please refer back to this blog at a later date. Enjoy! I remember waking up early the next day, well rested. I went downstairs and ate the breakfast that was provided by my hostel, which was cold cuts, cheese and toast and a choice of coffee or tea to drink as well as orange juice and milk. I ended up leaving the hostel later than expected because I got into conversations with several travelers, which was fine with me. First I talked to two girls from Paris who were going to move to Warsaw for a while. I then talked to a young man from Turkey who was studying abroad either in Germany or Spain ... read more

Note: All the events mentioned in this entry occurred back in late September to early October 2006. For more updated entries and trips, please refer to this website at a later date. Two weeks after my trip to Paris, I was finishing up my preparations for my upcoming 14-day trip to Poland. I had actually been preparing this trip for months, actually years. The primary reason why I chose to travel to Poland was to learn more about my Polish ancestry. I am a quarter Polish thanks to my maternal grandfather, who immigrated to the US from Poland in 1946 through a sponsor. Back in 1939, he and his family were captured by the Nazis from their small farm in one of Warsaw's suburbs, separated from one another and placed in concentration camps. He was first ... read more

Poland - The woman who walks by making faces at her reflection as she adjusts her outfit. Completely absorbed with her momentary beautifying task while walking by, as if she were in a room by herself with a mirror, she is oblivious or indifferent to the airport full of people who may be watching her. The group of Russian men. Identifiable in their identical charcoal colored suits, black tee shirts, shiny black shoes, silver watches, and mostly shaved heads in a hurry as they scuttle by. I hear them speaking Russian. And so, I sit in an American style pub restaurant that reminds me of a very small TGI Fridays. The walls are covered with cool old school 1950s signs. Pepsi-cola, Phillips 66, red rock cola, and that sort of thing. If that weren't enough, they ... read more

The perfect weather we have had in Warsaw so far had a little hiccup this morning before we headed off for the bus trip into the city. While we had a late breakfast there was a brief drop of light rain. The cabbages in the field next to the hotel are fermenting nicely after weeks of rain. Our back pack was filled with all the necessary protection - sun screen, insect repellent, sun hat, rain coats and umbrellas – and off we went. We wandered through part of Warsaw that still has pre-WWII buildings standing. The area known as Praga has many old buildings that have been renovated and are now used as art studios, galleries and clubs. One street we walked down looked as though nothing had changed. The brick buildings were in a bad ... read more

With another fine warm day assured we made our bus and tram journey into the city then went to find the former Jewish Ghetto. A series of granite memorials to the leaders of the Jewish Uprising is spaced out along the street and leads to the Ghetto Heroes Monument in a green park with shady trees. Today the many seats in this quiet place were occupied, often by elderly folk who may well have memories of the events of this terrible time. We continued exploring, looking for the only surviving part of the Ghetto Wall. We had the address and had read that the gate to the courtyard is kept locked, so on finding the address we stood and looked through the wrought iron bars wondering how to get a glimpse. Immediately a courier having lunch ... read more

Oh how we love the weather in Poland. The weather was perfect for our first day exploring the city of Warsaw, bright sunshine and pleasantly warm. To get into the city we needed to catch a bus from the hotel to the tram terminal and then a tram into the city, about an hour’s journey. The reception staff at the hotel provided advice and with their words of encouragement ringing in our ears we headed off. On these sorts of excursions you need to take little steps and our first little step was crossing the very busy highway to the bus stop. The bus driver was extremely helpful when we asked for a ticket. He mumbled something in Polish about a machine and drove on. Looking down the articulated bus we saw the ticket machine. What’s ... read more
