Houses in Bergen
Going up the mountain side - must be a lovely view from the higher ones. So, last night was the first time I made use of my sleeping mask - the curtains here are pretty weak, and considering it barely gets dark out… yeah, I used my fashionable mask.
I originally planned on going to the science/tech museum, but by the time I found my way down there - and saw the bus load of kids arriving - I decided I’d rather walk around Nygardsparken, the lovely city park beside it. Apparently it’s a local favourite for enjoying the sun - I decided to join in this experience. I plopped myself down in the middle of a grassy hill and spent 3-hrs reading, people-watching and doing some sudoku puzzles. Love it.
I wandered back into town after that - I would’ve stayed longer but didn’t want a sunburn thanks…
On the way back to the hostel I puttered around the tourist info office, grabbed a few things and then headed off to “Meny” (grocery store) for some bread. I grabbed a beer while I was at it… Hansah I believe it was called? Pretty good. I also grabbed a Norwegian donut - it was quite nice.
Back at the hostel, I took
Nygardsparken
The pond in the middle of the park. some time to plan for the next few stops on my journey, printed off some train tickets and then went to make myself some food only to discover someone stole my sandwich meat. Thief. I was not a happy camper. I suppose I’m lucky they stole the least expensive of everything in my grocery bag… but still, not cool. I still had some sausage leftover, so I made that instead… pfft.
I ventured towards “downtown” and the wharf area. Bergen is renowned for its fish market and it certainly didn’t disappoint! There was so much fish, both in quantity and various types. And the SIZE of the shrimp… holy freakin’ cow…
Side note: shrimp are quite possibly the ugliest creatures on this planet when they‘re freshly caught. Just sayin’
Anyway, I had a fresh-shrimp sandwich which had some kind of mystery sauce on it… it was very good though! It was the baby-shrimp though, not the monsters. I had to laugh at all the signs that say “please do not feed the birds” - I must say I’m stunned the place isn’t dive-bombed by birds all day! I also tried some caviar (they were doing free samples)
Shrimp paste?
Shrimp and crab paste..? At least, that's what I think it is. Hmm.. which was alright… not really my cup of tea, but others seemed to enjoy it.
Afterwards I wandered back towards my hostel, zig-zagging through the core. I came across a street-performer from the States. Why on earth you’d choose Norway, one of the most expensive places in the world, to perform out of… I do not know. He was good though - quite funny, and his act wasn’t all that bad. I particularly enjoyed his jokes about the States which very few in the audience got - you could tell who was North American in the crowd lol.
Another side note: he was juggling torches at one point, and in Norwegian torch is pronounced “fuckler” … now that was a golden moment.
Tomorrow I’m going to take a cable-car thing up the mountain for a view over the city, and check out a museum or two (yay for free student admission!) before heading out on the overnight train.
