Woke up in Bergen. A good thing after arriving here last night….
Weather was looking a little better but lots of clouds around. Busy busy breakfast then checked out, left our bags in the luggage room and hit the streets.
Walked quite a bit around the fish markets, then all the small food places along the waters edge and finally made it to the funicular.
People everywhere. A cruise ship in port today so we were queuing with all the unwashed. Finally got in and a car was about to leave. They had the front cabin closed off but as we were about to squeeze in to another one they opened it up. Meant we got to stand right on the window. Great views on the way up.
Views back down once we landed were spectacular. We could see the rain coming (appropriately dressed) so we got our pics off quickly. Lucky for us as once it came in the views were lost in the haze.
After a while decided to come back down. Again, the car we got to was pretty full. Waited and got the next car, this time in the front on the
way down. Again we had great views.
Got out and a hop on hop off bus was coming up the hill. Bus stop only a very short distance so on we get. Timing is everything. Got upstairs and found 3 seats together. Rain started again but we were protected. Good trip giving us a great idea of the interesting places to go back to when we come back to Bergen in a few weeks.
Off the bus and decide to go do some of the tourist bits. Very old buildings with narrow alleyways leading to small squares behind these shop fronts. All timber structures with timber walkways. Very interesting.
Got a bite to eat, coffee and maybe a beer. Back on the streets as our boarding doesn’t start till after 1600. Eventually have done enough walking. Back to the hotel, get the bags and book a taxi.
Taxi arrives. Toyota Yaris wagon. Hmm, Will the bags fit. Just with one in the seat beside Chris and Stephanie in the back seat. Luckily it wasn’t too far away.
Went through boarding stuff, got our room keys which also double for expenses, etc.
Safety briefing done,
on board and eventually into our cabins. Squeezy but practical.
Back upstairs for dinner, buffet tonight so first in best dressed. Got great seats near a window. Get the talk about wine packages. Decide on ours and order our wine for dinner. Our waiter - Raoul from Chile (who now lives in northern Norway) was good fun. I am now Mr Steve to him and I think he will look after us nicely.
Eat up and get the message we are about to depart (2030). Up to the top lounge and watch the ship slide away from the dock. Very smooth. Then we have a meet the officers and a ship briefing session. Worth the time to find out a few interesting bits of information.
That is all done and it is bed time for some. I am struggling to write this with a lazy G&T while watching the progress along our fjord as we leave Bergen. Very relaxing.
