Background: The Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed in 1815. In 1830 Belgium seceded and formed a separate kingdom. The Netherlands remained neutral in World War I, but suffered invasion and occupation by Germany in World War II. A modern, industrialized nation, the Netherlands is also a large exporter of agricultural products. The country was a founding member of NATO and the EEC (now the EU), and participated in the introduction of the euro in 1999.

The ones who couldn't hack it
The ones who couldn't hack it
These guys didn't even fish. They were too sick.
Today is our last day in Holland and since John has had an experience of a lifetime, fishing with Sake on a fishing trawler 120 kms out in the North Sea. Lucky for John he still has his Navy legs and loved the day. He and Sake caught lots of fish with Sake catching a Spanish Makreel, which was the only one caught. Many didn't survive the beginning of the trip, getting sea sick in the four hour journey getting to the fishing spot. They had a sensational day and stunk like fish and beer when they got home. Many a [View Full Entry]

Tag 84: Harlingen - Lauwersoog, 83.20 km, Fahrzeit 4:39, Durchschn. 17.84 km/h, Gesamtstrecke 4334 km Die Dünenlandschaft der holländischen Provinzen habe ich hinter mir gelassen. Jetzt geht es durch die Polderlandschaft. Flache, durchgehent landwirtschaftlich genutzte Gebiete. Deiche, Schafe, Gatter. Beim Gespäch stellt sic [View Full Entry]

Tag 83: Edmond aan Zee - Harlingen, 110.67 km, Fahrzeit 5:44, Durchschn. [View Full Entry]

I can pinpoint exactly where my affection with SC Cambuur Leeuwarden began; when I steered them to Champions League glory on Championship Manager. What? It's a fine way to pick a club. A little geeky perhaps but at least I was following it through by taking a three hour train to Friesland in the north of Holland to see them take on VVV Venlo. Some Man Utd 'fans' never go to a game in their lifetime. Si never complained about going along with my hair-brained scheme, and indeed seemed rather pleased with the idea as it meant a private hotel room [View Full Entry]

Today (Monday 5th August) we meet my Beppe (Grandmother) and looked around Friesland. For those who don’t know my Dad’s side of the family come from Friesland (the Northern part of the Netherlands). We headed out this morning in Oom Arjen’s Buick to another great Uncle and Auntie of mine, Oom Jan and Tante Aukje. We had coffee there and picked up my Beppe. We then headed off to Berlikum - the home town of my Beppe and Pake (Grandfather). We had a quick tour of the town and then went to another great Uncle and Auntie, Oom Popjke and Tante [View Full Entry]

Hey everybody, It's been a while since my last post, so time for a new one! I have been back from my big trip for over a year now...but still cannot get it out of my mind. I had a great time, saw amazing things and met some cool people along the way too! Really, I could recommend it to everyone! I live in the Netherlands again now, moved to Utrecht, where I study Theatre Design. So I create sets and costumes for theatre plays....at least that is what i'm trying to do. ;-) It's lots of fun, and I'm one [View Full Entry]

Finding Netherlands

 Europe » Netherlands » Frisia
Amsterdam became 'jump street' for exploring Holland and beyond. With Antonio at the wheel and Mama Marcia riding co-pilot we took to the 'snelweg' at different times and to different destinations. With the cramp, crowds and chaos of Amsterdam far behind we drove thru never-ending farmlands with tulip-filled greenhouses and black-and-white cows miniaturized in the distance. In this blog we chronicle our visits to a few rather memorable attractions. ZAANSE SCHANS A vast expanse of land turned museum, Zaanse Schans displayed quite possibly the only things more 'Holland [View Full Entry]

THE Deltawerken

We spent two nights in Leeuwarden, staying with Brandt's cousin Femke, her partner and their cats. It was nice to stay in a proper house again after living in our small flat in London, and then travelling the past few weeks. Yesterday we did a lot of driving around the small Friesland villages recommended by Femke. We drove into Gaastmeer for a coffee, and then onto Heeg where we had a good lunch, then continued along the coast. We saw a lot of farmland, and the traditional high roofed farm houses where hay used to be kept in the top levels [View Full Entry]
