We are in Amsterdam for a couple of nights. This is a really lovely city with very different architecture. The canals are beautiful and most of the streets beside the canals are lined with trees. Cycling is very popular here, bikes everywhere. We don't have to be careful of the cars, it's the people on bikes we have to watch. We have seen some parents with 2 kids in a cart at the front and a baby in a seat on the handle bars! The hotel we are staying in is like an old house. Our room is on the second floor with some very winding steep stairs. Would not want to have too many red wines!!!!! We are going on a canal cruise today for 1.5 hours. We are a bit sick of walking so ... read more

Keukenhof in Dutch: Kitchen garden, also known as the Garden of Europe, is situated near Lisse, Netherlands, and is the world's largest flower garden. Approximately 7,000,000 (seven million) flower bulbs are planted annually in the park. The best time to visit is early morning, right after the park opens. After lunch it is a zoo......... Keukenhof is open annually from the last week in March to mid-May. The best time to view the tulips is around mid-April, depending on the weather. In 2009 Keukenhof will be open from March 19 to May 21. ... read more

The isle of Vlieland shares its fame of being the sunniest county in The Netherlands with the isle of Texel. And to give it credit: It's been full sunshine now for over a week. The weather is just lovely, not very hot yet though, with the continuous winds blowing over the islands. Having a day off, I decided to tag along with a colleague and take 'The Vliehorst express', a large yellow truck that drives along the north coast all the way to the west side of the island. On the way we were promised seals, but unfortunately they weren't very cooperative today, just showing their heads above the surface for a breather. Long enough to take a quick snap of them. One third of the isle of Vlieland, the west side, is a large sand ... read more

Yes. And then I was home sweet home as they like to call it, back in Holland. After a quick and uneventful leave from China, I have returned home and done my visits around the family and friends. Economic recession aside, a job presented itself within a week, so after 9 days in Frisia, I am back on the islands working in the local hotels. This time around not on the isle of Terschelling, but the one on the west side of it; The isle of Vlieland. To come back on the issue of China; I had wanted to make a final blog on my leaving, but unfortunately my external hard drive broke, with it I lost a lot of data, including photo's. Fingers crossed, it can be fixed. Although really needed a break from China ... read more

Tag 84: Harlingen - Lauwersoog, 83.20 km, Fahrzeit 4:39, Durchschn. 17.84 km/h, Gesamtstrecke 4334 km Die Dünenlandschaft der holländischen Provinzen habe ich hinter mir gelassen. Jetzt geht es durch die Polderlandschaft. Flache, durchgehent landwirtschaftlich genutzte Gebiete. Deiche, Schafe, Gatter. ... read more

Tag 83: Edmond aan Zee - Harlingen, 110.67 km, Fahrzeit 5:44, Durchschn.

Hey everybody, It's been a while since my last post, so time for a new one! I have been back from my big trip for over a year now...but still cannot get it out of my mind. I had a great time, saw amazing things and met some cool people along the way too! Really, I could recommend it to everyone! I live in the Netherlands again now, moved to Utrecht, where I study Theatre Design. So I create sets and costumes for theatre plays....at least that is what i'm trying to do. ;-) It's lots of fun, and I'm one of the lucky people that can say they have their P (propedeuse)! I completely finished the first year and that’s quite a thing when you are studying at an art academy. In September I’ll go ... read more

Amsterdam became 'jump street' for exploring Holland and beyond. With Antonio at the wheel and Mama Marcia riding co-pilot we took to the 'snelweg' at different times and to different destinations. With the cramp, crowds and chaos of Amsterdam far behind we drove thru never-ending farmlands with tulip-filled greenhouses and black-and-white cows miniaturized in the distance. In this blog we chronicle our visits to a few rather memorable attractions. ZAANSE SCHANS A vast expanse of land turned museum, Zaanse Schans displayed quite possibly the only things more 'Holland' than the RLD or cheese: windmills. The Zaan area had once been the oldest industrial area in the world (so says Dutch historians). But when its population of windmills dwindled from about 1000 to 50, something had to be done. 'De Zaansche Molen' society was set up in ... read more
